City of Torrance Yard - Environmental Fair Chicken & Bees Information Booths

This important event, is the City's environmental fair which is set for June 7 from 10 to 2 at the City Yard in Torrance. The City is hoping that we can provide both a beekeeper booth and a chicken booth, and they will use the event to educate and get feedback to present to the Commission and Council. Please let me know if any of you group members would be willing to help us with these events. Thank you!

ps, Tamlynn has volunteered to host this event. She is in need of people to staff the booth. See thread below or just contact her directly.

Thanks Tamlynn for organizing this event. Awesome!

Everyone, thank you for your support and caring about chickens!! Roberta, thanks for making sure the banner got to me, it sure made the booth a lot more "serious" and Emily, I really appreciated your help in setting up! Tamlynn, you were the star of the booth with those beautiful "girls" that attracted everyone's attention! They made what we are trying to do much more tangible! Ned, thanks for standing by and supporting the booth. AND I think it was a good ploy on the City's part to have both the bees and chickens booths right next to them! The sticky-note board for the bees was nearly 100% "yeses" also !!! Great job, everyone! Now, let's get the City to approve the keeping of chicken!!

Tamlynn did a wonderful job with the set-up up the booth. I was so impressed! Great job with the sign-up sheet for interested would be chicken parents. Thank-you so much for making it happen. Thank you to Sherry too for putting up the meet-up and making sure things were organized.

This meetup was amazing! I am so excited about all the support we had from the public. I collect about 45 names and emails of people who would like more info about keeping chickens in Torrance. We answered many questions and everyone loved seeing my pretty hens and their (thankfully) hard-boiled eggs. A HUGE thanks to Sherry, Emily, and Ned who sat at our table and spoke to the public. Thanks to Roberta for the sign and for helping to clean up. The city council members had tons of positive comments and learned some facts about chickens too! I will be directing a lot of traffic to the LAUCE meetup group and hopefully get more support for future Torrance city meetings as well as our great chicken community.

My kid and I went to the fair today. The bee and chicken booths were great. We learned a lot. Thanks!

I am so encouraged! There seems to be so much support in Torrance for chickens! The city Environmental Commission was having people write their opinions on yellow stickies and putting them up on a board. That board was virtually covered in "yes's" and only 2 "no's".

Huge thanks to Tamlynn for organizing and setting up such a great looking booth - and bringing her chickens!

Tamlynn and Torrance Environmental Fair Angels: Roberta Kato is dropping off the Chicken Banner to my house tonight. I will be there at the yard on Saturday morning at 9 AM to help set up. I can stay until 11 AM.

I have a class to teach in the morning so not sure if I can get there in time to drop things off. Let me know if you guys want the banner, tents etc. I could drop it off. I get my fuel at that site and need to go this weekend anyways so can try and come towards the end. Trying to figure out other scheduling. Bees are being covered by Laura and Randy.

I didn't know there was a banner and stuff! Yay! If you could coordinate with Sherry to borrow the stuff, that would be awesome! Thank you.

Tamlynn, I have sent Roberta a direct email asking if she'd like to meet somewhere or I could come and pick up whatever she wants to lend. I will be at the lot at 9 AM to help out. I can stay until 11:00. This will be fun!!

Just a few days until this event! Thanks everyone who has contacted me and offered support. I plan on being there the whole time, and I'd like others to come if they can, maybe in shifts, just to be at the booth and help speak to people who may be passing by. If you can volunteer for an hour, please post here and say which hour would be best for you.

Roberta, the banner and whatever else you can lend us would be greatly appreciated. Tamlynn has an EASY UP which I believe she is bringing. Let me know if I can meet you half way somewhere during this week so we can have everything by early Saturday, June 7. I am more than happy to come to you.

Some details from the city about exhibitor info:

Thank you for participating in the Torrance Environmental Fair! As you know, the Fair is scheduled for Saturday, June 7th at the Torrance City Services Facility located at 20500 Madrona Avenue. The Fair will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 2:00 p.m. We are asking that all exhibitors arrive at the City Services Facility by 9:00 a.m. to set up their booth. The City will provide an 8 foot table and 2 chairs for each exhibitor. Exhibitors will enter the main gate of the facility on Madrona Avenue, and will be directed to the Environmental Fair staging area. As you arrive, you will be assigned your space number. There you will unload and the remove vehicles to a parking area within the same facility. Please ensure that you are able to complete unloading and remove your vehicle by 9:00 a.m., as gates to the parking area will be closing.

Please include me on where we shall meet and the time. Also, what shall I bring? I was thinking to purchase something cute and memorable as a handout. Ideas??

      May 30, 2014

    • Tamlynn

I'm out of town right now for a funeral. I will be back later this week and be able to do more planning for this event. I like the idea of handouts!

Tamlyn and others: How do I post all of these threads into the Discussion Board? Apparently there is more exposure in that portal. Please let me know if anyone knows how to do this.

  • Sherry R.

I think I recall someone on this site who has already put together a listing of cities who've legalized chicken-keeping. Wonder if we can borrow that list. I will be happy to do any updates necessary. Please let me know soon! Thanks!

    May 20, 2014

    • Tamlynn

Sherry, I would love it if you took responsibility for finding the list, updating it or making your own, and organizing the info into a format that we can easily display at our table.

      May 20, 2014

    • Laura B.

Sherry, as a suggestion, you could ask at the discussion board. This list has been talked about in there, and I'm sure someone knows the exact answer :)

    • Tamlynn

Awesome! What kind of info do you think people stopping by the booth would want to know?

      May 20, 2014

  • Sherry R.

Tamlynn, I am right there with you regarding getting this booth set up for the Torrance Environmental Fair June 7. I understand you have an easy-up and the city is providing a table. Let's brainstorm as to how we can quickly and efficiently educate the passersby on the glories of chicken- and beekeeping. I have dedicated the whole day that day to getting chickens and bees legalized so please let me know how you'd like to get this going![masked]

Great! I would like to focus on chickens because i have no practical knowledge of beekeeping. I hope the beekeepers will have their own table. Because i am a sucker for chicken related stuff, today i designed and ordered 100 "i heart chickens" stickers that we can pass out. Lol. Im planning on bringing some eggs from my chickens for display, and hopefully the chickens themselves too. Sherry, can you do some research and make a spreadsheet or small poster about which local cities already allow chickens? This may take some phone calling or ordinance searching. Dont forget to include Los Angeles along with other South Bay cities.

OK, this event is coming up and I've received an application form to have a booth/table at the event. I am willing to submit the form, and bring an easy up. The city will provide a table and chairs. Who wants to come and help talk to people who come by the booth? Any suggestions about fliers or fact sheets we could make up that would be helpful to pass out? Other ideas?

    May 14, 2014

    • Tamlynn

I was told by the city I can send in a late registration. I'd love some support in staffing the booth!

5 months ago, my son and I built a coop and purchased 6 chicks. One turned out to be a rooster, and since he began to sing, the neighbors are complaining.

We want to find a good home for him, and we are in Mar Vista. Any suggestions?

    May 15, 2014

    • Laura B.

hi 1022cj, welcome to the group. I would suggest that you post a message to the message board. You can access it by going to "discussions" tab on top of this page and then to the 'message board'. A lot more exposure than posting here. Good luck finding him a home - I already have 5 and can't take more :(
