April Meetup:: How to Beat the Summer Heat

  • Apr 6, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Heat can kill hens quickly; it is even more devastating than cold. This Meetup will discuss the many ways to manage your flock and keep them hydrated during the triple digit temperatures of summer.

After a few years of keeping chickens, Cynthia has figured out some tried and true ways and will share her expertise with us.

Also, some people asked to where to get the organic feeds- Magill Ranch Casade or Scratch and Peck. Azure farms is a good source. It's an online, ordering co-op that delivers to various drops once a month. Searching the forums has a lot of info about it. I personally use the Pasadena Rose bowl drop.

Damoor's Feed and Tack at 1532 Riverside Drive in Glendale is where we buy our organic chicken feed.
The style ours like best is a "crumble" Their number is[masked]-2841.
As always , I learned great new things to keep the Micheltorena Elementary School flock healthy.
    Thanks, Cynthia.

And if they don't have any, Stephens Hay and Grain down the road on riverside has chicken food.

Cynthia, what do you mean by "clean shoes, etc"?

    April 6, 2014

  • Cynthia

I'm looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. I'm afraid I don't have chairs for 40 (!) so you might want to bring a folding chair with you just in case. And please remember clean shoes etc. Looks like this is a timely topic, since we're supposed to hit the 90's next week. Sheesh!

I will be there! Still finalizing our Altadena coop in preparation for 4 Easter Eggers (or Ameracaunas) so this will be good for me. Looking forward to it!

I'd like to hear about how to interrupt broody bird behavior. I've had best results by blocking off the nest area, but that is hard on the other layers.
My home in West LA is available for meetings, most Sundays are avaialble for me and some Saturdays

She's up to day 8 now of the sequester with 2 brief attempts to let her back in the coop. Both times she made a bee line to the nest box and stayed over 4 hours. I brought her back to solitary confinement and I feel bad about it. She's in the shade all day and only open hardware cloth beneath her on legs 30 inces off the ground. Why is she still hot-broody?

It must be spring! They can't fight their nature. I've had hens go broody for months and months and finally gave them to chicken keepers who hatched chicks just so my broodies could have a life. The force is strong with this one!

Hi gang - I'm looking forward to seeing you all!

I know there are a lot of questions, and we'll try to get to all of them, but remember the topic is "Beating the Heat" so look at your setup from that perspective and come armed with questions or tips. Also, if you're just getting started with chickens, this is something to add into your coop plans, so bring those if you're ready to build. Seeya! P.S. I'll have some minimal snacks and drinks but feel free to bring something if you like - or DON'T bring something if you don't want to. NO pressure either way. *** AND *PLEASE* practice biosecurity measures. Wear clean non-chickeny clothes and shoes!! We're all in this together - we need to respect each other's flock health. ***

Sounds like fun! My greatest chicken challenge are the a-holes! I have two in particular, out of my 6, that are just little shits. They bully all the other girls, who just wanna make nice. I once heard someone say that she doesn't tolerate that in her flock... how the heck do you train a chicken? Anyway, if that can be a topic, I'll be there. I'll be there anyway. =:>

Hi. Where will it be and what is the topic? We are new chicken owners and we would love to learn more about keeping these delightful birds. We live in Lake View Terrace and we are open to hosting a future event. Thanks!
