Holding and Herding Your Chickens

This will be a potpourri meet-up.  Michelterona Elementary School has a coop and a weekly open house that we will be joining.  Here are a few things we'll be doing.

- Learn how to hold a chicken to inspect their crop, wings, feathers, etc.

- They have a chicken, Colette, with sour crop that Nancy has been treating.  See how to check for sour crop and how to treat sour crop.  Here see is a year ago and then currently with her pendulous crop.

- Learn how to supervise a child while they hug a chicken so they both stay safe.

- They have the chickens in the garden sometimes and we can discuss ways to herd chickens back to their run including the squirt bottle method and shooing them.

- Brainstorm improvements to their coop pictured below.  They also have a couple of bunnies and we can brainstorm ways to incorporate bunnies and chickens.

- We will have a bleach foot bath to disinfect shoes on the way in for biosecurity. Please wear appropriate footwear. Wear clean non-chicken clothes and shoes you do not wear into your chicken runs. Thank-you!

There is parking on Sunset Blvd.

I enjoyed meeting everyone and introducing the Micheltorena Elementary School Garden flock to the group. As always, I learned as much from the meet-up members as I shared so thanks for coming and for your support!

Thank you so much. My son & I had fun. I love seeing other coops and food/water set ups. Thank you for the fresh strawberries, too!

Sorry for showing up late and missing part of the fun. I have chickens that don't like to be picked up so Roberta's lessons on how to hold a chicken was very helpful. Thanks for organizing!

Bring yourself, treats for the chickens always welcome, treats for people not necessary. Remember shoes that can be dipped in a bleach bath to protect your chickens and theirs. Thanks!

I want everyone to know that Colette has passed away. From Nancy, "Collette, our prima-diva chicken has departed from this earthly plane after a long battle with 'sour crop'. she is survived by her daughters and a gaggle of friends and family who will miss her kind leadership and easygoing way about the garden. she was the only chicken courageous enough to allow constant petting and holding. she will be missed and long remembered. "

We will still have our event so we can learn from Colette's experience and support her chicken family. Please remember to wear shoes that can be bleach bath dipped for biosecurity. Wear clean clothes that you have not worn with your chickens or hugged with your chickens. Donations to support the school garden and chicken feed are welcome.

I live in south LA and plan to add a few chickens to my organic garden. As far as I can tell, no one in my neighborhood has chickens. It may create a sensation!
