West Side Ruby & Rails Study Group
PAIR UP AND LEARN TOGETHER What we are currently reading: The Ruby Way: Solutions and Techniques in Ruby Programming By Hal Fulton, starting an RSPEC BOOK and finishing the HARTL BOOK Heralded as a great "how-to" book for effective Ruby programming with over 400+ examples that answer the question: "How do I do this in Ruby?" We'll be going back and forth between the book, the Ruby Standard Library and our own resources. ** IF you have not read the Chapter we will accommodate to where everyone is at the moment. Right now we're going through Chapter12 and will pause wherever we are collectively. We're going to be learning about Testing today. RSPEC - https://www.devmynd.com/blog/setting-up-rspec-and-capybara-in-rails-5-for-testing/ //////////=====//////////===== //////////===== Also we're starting M. Hartl's Book (https://www.railstutorial.org/book): RUBY ON RAILS TUTORIAL (RAILS 5) Try reading up to Chapter 8 //////////=====//////////===== //////////===== Goals: Practice.... until its 2nd nature. Each week, based on our momentum we'll surge forward or take our time to practice and truly understand to the core. Most likely we'll be working on one chapter every 2 weeks, giving all of us time to read, practice and master the concepts. What to Expect & How to Prep - Read the chapter we're working before our meetup! - If you've already read the book, come mentor and pair. It's priceless. - Be ready to ask questions or share insights. - Highly encouraged to purchase the book. - Practice with Exercism.io (http://exercism.io/), Repl.it (https://repl.it/languages/ruby) or Cloud9 (https://c9.io/). All are free. All are welcome and at every level. We try to steward the night toward the the right level to keep everyone engaged and practicing. //////////=====//////////===== //////////===== FYI this is the SAME MEETUP, DIFFERENT URL: West-side Rails Study Group http://www.meetup.com/Westside-Rails-Study-Group/ LA MEETUP https://www.meetup.com/laruby/ (http://www.meetup.com/Los-Angeles-Womens-Ruby-on-Rails-Group/) Let's remember that we're not all at the same level. It's highly encouraged for senior programmers to come and mentor. Even it its been only a few years, its truly priceless to someone who is brand new to programming. //////////=====//////////===== //////////===== Currently looking for help with this group! Please reach out. Anna Mendoza (323)[masked] [masked]
