Customizing Your WordPress Site

By popular demand, I'll be discussing "How to Customize Your WordPress site." In keeping with our Beginner's scope, this will be an introduction to customizing through the use of themes and modifying your theme's CSS... No programming required!

Following the main topics, we'll follow up with our standard Q & A. If you have your own WordPress site, no matter what stage of readiness, bring your laptop and questions and I'll try to get you pointed in the right direction. Questions need not be related to customizing, but this will be a great opportunity to ask related questions! :-)

As you know, I'm always looking for topics of interest to you! Is there something in your theme that's driving you nuts? Let me know! If you have a burning beginner question, it's likely others do too!

Email me directly:

if you have an urgent need you want discussed, please let me know!

Recently I recommended to our beginning WordPress members that they exercise caution when considering using a WordPress theme from Themeforest.

The following two newly-published articles -- (1) http://wptavern.com/whats-your-perception-of-themeforest and (2) https://philiparthurmoore.com/ruining-wordpress/ -- discuss much more eloquently than I could ever paraphrase about continuing problems with some Themeforest themes. If you attended this meeting and were confused by the brief Themeforest "debate" at this meeting, I encourage you to read these two articles and judge for yourself...

As always, I welcome your comments & questions...on this or any other topic. Please feel free to email me directly: [masked]

Thanks for your interest in learning WordPress!

Karen - I was the other half of the debate. And I have used ThemeForest. My point was to not paint every seller on ThemeForest as inferior. To do that, one would have to do the same for Amazon and eBay. They are all marketplaces. As a purchaser, one should do a little research into what one is buying and it is possible to do that with ThemeForest also. Check the seller's rating, number of downloads, forums related to problems, etc. People need to take responsibility and act as informed purchasers, and not always be looking for low price or free. Especially a business.

Yes, Stacy, you are right in that it's "buyer beware." I also agree and strongly encourage "buy your theme" as it's a business expense! However, this group is WP101...These members are all new to WordPress, and many are new to web sites...My responsibility to my members is to caution them whenever I think it is necessary. I have found over the many years I have done training many business people aren't well-versed in technology, even thought ehey're great in business. I'd much rather err on the side of caution than have someone make a costly mistake because I didn't do my due diligence as a "trainer." IMO...I realize that everyone has their own opinion...That's the way I choose to conduct my training...

Hi Karen... I'm trying to figure out how to use AMPPS to work local and create a child's theme. I have no idea what I'm doing or where the files live. See you tomorrow night.

Debbie, I'm sorry we did not get to your question on "where the files live" so if you'd like me to look into this please email me directly. Remember, I'm still in LA, possibly through Monday, so let me know if you want me to explore this more. Thanks! :-)

Hi Karen my question is pretty basic, I'm trying to figure out how to use a domain name on WordPress that I bought from Go Daddy.

    • Karen M.

Hi Lynn, It depends on what stage you are in...and some other specifics! ;-) Are you on WordPress.com or WordPress.org? Is this a new site/WordPress install? Are you working "locally"-- on your own computer's hard drive-- or working through your web host? Specifics...it's all about specifics. :-) I can reply faster if you email me directly: kmccamy@freelancetechnologyreview, outside of meetup. :-)

Hi Karen, will there be a chance to get individual CSS guidance? I'm at a roadblock & don't know where/who to turn to.

Ok Karen thanks. Not sure I'll be able to make it in time now. Prior commitment overlaps. Maybe arrive later if it works out.

No worries! We frequently get started late, waiting for people to find parking and/or for the regular customers to "give up" their tables ;-) Come by whenever, if you get free!

I have a late appointment on Tuesday, so I'm sorry I'll have to miss this session. Thanks Karen for hosting these and doing such a great job. My husband (who came with me a couple weeks ago) just started his first WP site!

Hi Wendy, Sorry to hear you you can't make it...Big Congrats to your husband! That's great! You could always send him to take notes for you. ;-)

I forgot about the Saturday Meetup! We are heading out together on a quick trip, so we'll miss your 4th Sat, but we'll aim to see you again in June. We are also attending the Pasadena WP Meetup if anyone else is out this way.
