Description from the previous group organizer(s):

"People Helping the Community is a group of individuals who have the common interest to help those in need. Our members will team up with other organizations from all over Los Angeles to provide support wherever it's needed. We are active, and provide a variety of monthly volunteer events from feeding the homeless, trips to orphanages, visiting senior centers, Reading to Kids, Habitat for Humanity, and other great events."

Suggestion:

If anyone joins this group, editing your email settings is recommended. Many "reminder" emails are automatically sent everyday by Meetup.com, which can become annoying and overwhelming. Changing email preferences takes a few seconds and is worthwhile.

After joining this group, go to https://www.meetup.com/account/comm/LosAngelesVolunteers

...and set "Meetup reminders" to "Never"

Feel free to change other settings to reduce emails.

For anyone using the Meetup app, in the lower right corner, click "Profile"

...then in the top right corner, tap the 3 vertical dots and then "Manage notifications" and then "Email Updates" and scroll down to tap SoCal Volunteers United and set "Meetup reminders" to "Never"

Hi. If you are using the Meetup mobile app on your phone, look down a few lines below and tap the red-colored "Read more" to expand the description. TAP THIS --------- If you are using a computer or laptop/notebook, then you should be fine. Okay, everybody should now be able to see the full description on their screen. Reminder for everyone: If Meetup sends too many emails, then look at the bottom of their email and click Unsubscribe or Manage your settings or account page. Recommended for anyone new to this group or volunteering for the first time: https://www.meetup.com/LosAngelesVolunteers/events/218808844 ____________________ Hi. Would anyone want to attend this event and help host? Hosting isn't hard. It involves being a point of contact in case others sign up and want to meet & volunteer together. If your plans/availability change, and you can't attend anymore, that's fine, just let us know and maybe someone else can step up to host, but if not, it's okay and we can cancel this meetup. ____________________ I try to spread the word about volunteer opportunities and raise awareness about non-profits/charities that do good work. This is from Urban Community Outreach's Drop in Center. It occurs on "every Sunday except the month of July and the first weekend in December." https://www.ucodic.org/what-uco-does http://www.urbancommunityoutreach.org/dic.html http://www.firstchurchlb.org/involvement/justice-outreach-2 http://ucodic.org/blog.html https://www.facebook.com/urban.communityoutreach.9 The Drop-in-Center "is a community center for homeless people and the working poor in down town Long Beach. We strive to provide a haven from the weather and the harsh conditions of the streets on Sunday afternoons." "Our Volunteer Day starts at 8:30 AM. Join us for a couple of hours or stay for the day or at least the afternoon." • Food Preparation: 8:30am – 11:30am • Preparation to Food Service: 10:00am – 2:00pm • Transition / Set up: 11:30am – 12:30pm • Food Service: 12:30pm – 4:00pm • Closing and Clean-up: 2:00pm – 5:00pm ____________________ No need to bring any food. Everything is provided by them (ingredients, knives, cutting boards, utensils, gloves, etc.). Volunteers can choose when to arrive and how long to stay. Your choice. The morning involves preparing the meal (washing & cutting vegetables, preparing other ingredients, cooking, etc.). The afternoon is for serving the meal, helping with the clothing distribution, cleaning up, etc. So even though this starts at 8:30am, feel free to arrive whenever is best for you and your schedule/availability (9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, etc). Some people might arrive around 11:30am or 12:00pm to help serve the meal. Serving food seems to be popular, so if it's crowded at that time, thank you for your patience and understanding. My impression is anyone is welcome to help volunteer. Even though this is at a church, being Christian or religious is not required nor expected. "Children 16 and under are welcome, but must have one parent or guardian for every three children attending." Wearing appropriate clothing is recommended and closed-toe shoes are required (no sandals, flip flops, etc.). Street parking is usually free on Sundays, but please check signs/meters to confirm. To get to the kitchen area, please avoid the church entrance. Instead, on the side of the church building, on Cedar Ave, next to the brick wall, look for an archway and door. https://goo.gl/maps/dno8N1Qh1PU2 "Enter through the steel mesh gates...Go to the courtyard where you will see glass windows and our dining area to the left. Sign in and a coordinator will get you started." This should occur on most Sundays (except in July and the first Sunday in December). ____________________ Photos: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.810609952382383 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.510369959073052 https://www.facebook.com/pg/urban.communityoutreach.9/photos Videos: https://www.facebook.com/pg/urban.communityoutreach.9/videos ____________________ The following are other volunteer opportunities in Long Beach: http://lbrm.org/meals The Long Beach Rescue Mission serves dinner at 6:00pm. A: There are multiple/different projects each month, so the address (date and time) depend on which one you want to help with. It's up to you to decide what/when to help. Various projects occur on different Saturdays and Sundays, so peruse the links below and if something interests you, feel free to attend. If you want to invite other group members to join you, tell me which specific event you want to help with (location, date, time, etc.), and I'll add it to the calendar and maybe other members will join you. ____________________ If the other events currently posted in this group don't appeal to you or are geographically inconvenient, then there's a good chance one of the following volunteer opportunities is in/near your city. Does anyone want to... help others receive nutritious fruit & veggies for a healthy diet? or help SoCal have more trees and combat climate change? or help a beach stay clean & pristine? ____________________ I try to spread the word about volunteer opportunities and raise awareness about non-profits/charities that do good work. ____________________ Food Forward https://foodforward.org/about/what-we-do 1) Some residents in SoCal have yards (or groves) of fruit trees (orange, grapefruit, other citrus, etc.), and sometimes they can't eat all the fruit. Volunteers harvest/glean (pick) the surplus fruit off the trees. 2) At some farmers markets, some farmers donate excess fruit & veggies that is unsold. Volunteers walk around and collect the fresh produce. So instead of fruit and veggies spoiling and going to waste, nearby agencies (shelters/missions, soup kitchens, food pantries, etc.) can distribute the fresh fruit and veggies to individuals such as homeless, seniors, students, low-income families, etc. ____________________ TreePeople https://www.treepeople.org/about https://www.treepeople.org/about/what-we-do 1) They plant new trees and/or care for existing trees 2) They restore forests or parks (e.g. maintenance, weeding, watering, mulching, etc.). ____________________ Their photos & videos show what they are about: - Food Forward https://www.facebook.com/foodforwardla/photos https://www.instagram.com/foodforward https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzT9UXTdQmI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIJiluhOPbE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPgEbwbpNZs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4N9pZMOdO8 - TreePeople https://www.facebook.com/pg/TreePeopleorg/photos https://www.instagram.com/treepeople_org https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3JNGpPSPSw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3avWI5jERQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGLekslb56U ____________________ Food Forward - https://foodforward.org/about/faq https://foodforward.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq - https://foodforward.org/about/backyard-harvesting If interested in helping glean/pick fruit from trees, look for the green-colored "Backyard Harvests" at https://foodforward.org/volunteer/sign-up-to-volunteer Minimum age to help is 5. - https://foodforward.org/about/farmers-market If interested in helping collect fruit & veggies at farmers market, look for the white-colored "Farmers Market Gleaning Events" at https://foodforward.org/volunteer/sign-up-to-volunteer Minimum age to help is 12. - Backyard harvests and farmers market gleaning events occur throughout LA County, even in the Ventura area. - And if anyone lives in/near Long Beach, another group does something similar in collecting fruit from trees, and they also could use volunteers. This event is from Claudia Perez and her group, LA on Cloud 9. https://www.laoncloud9.org/about-us They are very active, passionate, and dedicated (year-round), to help people and their respective pets (cats & dogs). One of their events is outreach, which involves going to people on the streets. http://www.laoncloud9.org/street-teams ____________________ Their outreach usually occurs on multiple Sundays (such as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but typically not the 4th/last Sunday). They sometimes reschedule the time or date (due to holidays, special events, inclement weather, etc.), so please check their event page (confirm date & time) at http://www.facebook.com/LAonC9/events - Their videos show what the event is about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFCbVWOWNgM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CFNpvOovos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYoEhVYaM74 ____________________ "Join our Street Team Soldiers, if you have compassion, dedication and the courage to make a difference in the streets of Los Angeles." "Hit the streets and distribute much needed items to homeless people and pets in the community." "Each generous gesture is guaranteed to tremendously help many marginalized and forgotten members of our society." "A sandwich, bottle of water, hygiene bags and a smile will go a long way to bring much needed humanity back into our longstanding tradition helping the less fortunate in our communities." They welcome donations of sandwiches, water, fruit, snacks, clothing, blankets, shoes, socks, hygiene items, and pet food (e.g. cat & dog food). Since walking is involved, wearing comfortable (closed-toe) shoes is recommended. Please also check the weather to know what to bring (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, jacket/sweater, etc.). ____________________ Note: To help me save time, this is automatically posted in this group, but please check their FB event page to confirm a "Street Outreach" event is happening on this date and time. http://www.facebook.com/LAonC9/events Or contact them at [masked] [masked] [masked] - Redundant Reiteration: Regardless of what is posted here, the most accurate info is on their FB page. If it's not posted on there, then disregard and ignore this Meetup event. I'm sometimes busy, but I'll try my best to check every week/month. http://www.facebook.com/LAonC9/events They sometimes start in the mornings (during summer months to avoid the heat), but can also change to the afternoons too, so please check their FB page or contact them directly to confirm the start time. ____________________ They meet first at their storage locker. Extra Space Storage - Unit #[masked] S. Central Ave, Los Angeles, 90001 Then after loading up on items to be distributed, they drive to different streets/encampments to distribute. They usually finish in 2 - 3 hours, depending on how many items/donations they have to give out. Oh, and not a requirement, but they ask all volunteers to wear a black shirt (or sweater/jacket if it's cold). My guess is it helps everyone know you're a volunteer. Optional - they sell black t-shirts - https://www.laoncloud9.org/product-category/apparel ____________________ They go out in a large group, so nobody should be alone. But not everyone may be comfortable going out to "the streets" and interacting with the homeless. This is completely voluntarily and optional. If anyone feels nervous/scared, totally fine. There is no obligation or pressure. Feel free to leave anytime if you are afraid or uncomfortable. ____________________ Photos: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1870864446356923 https://www.facebook.com/pg/LAonC9/photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/laoncloud9/17101700136 http://www.flickr.com/photos/laoncloud9/17126097552 http://www.flickr.com/photos/laoncloud9/17101694556 http://www.flickr.com/photos/laoncloud9/16939857398 http://www.flickr.com/photos/laoncloud9/16715447940 http://www.flickr.com/photos/laoncloud9/16902857225 http://www.flickr.com/photos/laoncloud9/16716693879 ____________________ Photo Source/Credit: LA on Cloud 9 ____________________ The storage locker address is on Central Ave, but go to 61st St. https://goo.gl/maps/ChV2ZJ7eq8s If the security gate is open, there might be parking space available closer to Unit 39. If the security gate is closed, you can either park outside (near the front, by the storage locker "office" and wait for someone to open the gate and walk in... ...or you can enter the gate code to open the security gate. - To get the gate code, you can message them on Facebook or email them via [masked] [masked] or ask Claudia. Her phone # is posted in the description on their FB event page: http://www.facebook.com/LAonC9/events - If anyone joins them for distributing...they usually go out with multiple vehicles. I suggest either carpooling with one of the regular/experienced volunteers. If there's no room to ride with someone else or if you prefer driving yourself, I highly suggest you ask them where they are driving to first (get an address or intersection), because when they caravan, it's easy for the cars in the back to get stopped due to red lights, and it might be hard to find the vehicles in the front. Again, get Claudia's phone # (either ask her in person at the event or in the description of the Facebook event page), and call/text her if you get lost. ____________________ *394819#

Hi. If you are using the Meetup mobile app on your phone, look down a few lines below and tap the red-colored "Read more" to expand the description. ____________________ FAQ Q: Why can't I just show up? If I sign up here on Meetup, why do I also have to sign up with another person or register on another site? A: I don't want anyone to show up to find out the event is canceled / rescheduled, or that they have too many volunteers and room isn't available for you to help. Registering with them will save you a spot with them and they can confirm the date, start time, address, parking info, instructions, and updates if anything changes. Scroll down for more info on how to register with them. ____________________ I try to spread the word about volunteer opportunities and raise awareness about non-profits/charities that do good work. This event is from another group, Hope Mill. http://www.hopemill.com/our-carepacks.html "Hope Mill is committed to helping the homeless by providing food and other basic necessities, along with a message of hope and care to the clients they serve." "They are enlisting the help of volunteers (age 8 and up) to assemble...CarePacks filled with food, water, clothing, blankets, and essential care items to homeless men, women and children in Southern California." Their assembly days are usually on the 3rd or 4th Sunday of each month (except for major holidays). ____________________ No need to bring anything. The items that go into their care packs are provided by them. Volunteers help assemble small packs of goodies (snacks, hygiene items, etc.). Varies items are then placed into the backpacks. ____________________ To help, sign up with Pearl from Hope Mill via [masked] or [masked] - She will know if they need additional volunteers, and she can provide the address, driving & parking directions, and other relevant info. It's possible this might be rescheduled/canceled, so please check with Pearl and Hope Mill (confirm date, time, location, etc.) before going. Thank you. Signing up here on Meetup is insufficient. They might have enough volunteers, so checking with Pearl is necessary. Plus, if anything changes, they have a way to notify you. ____________________ Note: To help me save time, this is automatically posted in this group (3rd Sunday of the month), but they sometimes meet on the 4th Sunday, so please remember to check with Pearl to confirm the date. I'll try to check each month, but in case I forget, please check with Pearl and Hope Mill. Thank you. https://www.facebook.com/hopemillcares ____________________ Photos: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1839403652836336 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1370649796378393 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1166521103457931 https://www.facebook.com/pg/hopemillcares/photos http://www.hopemill.com/photo-gallery.html ____________________ The care packs they assemble are filled with essential goodies and helpful items. Various stations are set up and volunteers can choose where to help. If at any point you want to take a break, or switch to another station and help with another task, that's totally fine. They are very flexible and accommodating. Children are allowed to help with simple tasks. The Valley can get hot, so being under shaded tents helps. ____________________ If street parking on Orion Ave or Lanark St is full, try a parking lot for Galpin Motors at 8210 Orion Ave. Pearl can confirm that they have approval to park in their parking lot. https://goo.gl/maps/ytiE3FSGjs92 After parking, walk south on Orion Ave, and turn left (heading east) on Lanark St. Look for a small entrance and a table where you sign in and get a name tag. https://goo.gl/maps/s8WSQAYGQqC2 Then walk a short distance and look for a room with other people waiting. Popcorn, snacks, and water/soda should be available for free to volunteers. Pearl and the other volunteers are pretty friendly, so if anyone helps with this, you should have a positive and fun experience. Thank you. ____________________ Photo Source/Credit: Hope Mill
