How to find us

Sign up with them for details (date, start time, address, parking, etc.). If other members sign up, maybe post a comment, or contact each other in advance, and coordinate together on how best to meet one another. Thanks for helping. Have fun!

Hi. If you are using the Meetup mobile app on your phone, look down a few lines below and tap the red-colored "Read more" to expand the description.

TAP THIS ---------

If you are using a computer or laptop/notebook, then you should be fine.

Okay, everybody should now be able to see the full description on their screen.

Reminder for everyone: If Meetup sends too many emails, then look at the bottom of their email and click Unsubscribe or Manage your settings or account page.

Recommended for anyone new to this group or volunteering for the first time:

To help me save time, this is automatically posted on the 1st Saturday of each month, but they might actually meet on a different Saturday.

I'll try to check each month, but if I forget, please remember to contact Sherri from Animal Sanctuary to confirm the date.

To repeat, regardless of the date shown here, check with Sherri for the right date and sign up with her. Thank you.

Would anyone want to attend this event and help host?

Hosting isn't hard.

It involves being a point of contact in case others sign up and want to meet & volunteer together.

If your plans/availability change, and you can't attend anymore, that's fine, just let us know and maybe someone else can step up to host, but if not, it's okay and we can cancel this meetup.

Q: Why can't I just show up? If I sign up here on Meetup, why do I also have to sign up with another person or register on another site?

A: I don't want anyone to show up to find out the event is canceled / rescheduled, or that they have too many volunteers and room isn't available for you to help.

Registering with them will save you a spot with them and they can confirm the date, start time, address, parking info, instructions, and updates if anything changes.

Scroll down for more info on how to register with them.

1 ) This event is far. It's located northeast of Santa Clarita and south of Lancaster / Palmdale.

Drive time from OC & LA is 1 - 1.5 hours.

The event starts at 10 am, so some might have to start driving around 8:30 am.

2) This event involves actual work (manual labor). Not everybody is going to view this as fun.

...which is fine because space is limited, ergo...

3) Signing up here on Meetup is insufficient. Signing up with the farm animal shelter is necessary / required.

They want an accurate number of who is actually attending, so they have a separate sign-up process.

Believe it or not, they actually get full with volunteers each month and room is limited. Therefore, anyone who wants to participate must also RSVP with them directly. Scroll down for instructions on how to sign up.

"Babe" is one of my favorite movies. It's about a little pig and some farm animals, plus...

I try to spread the word about volunteer opportunities and raise awareness about non-profits/charities that do good work.

This event is from Farm Sanctuary (aka Animal Acres).

If anyone likes farm animals or is vegetarian/vegan, then consider helping at a special shelter for chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, ducks, geese, and cattle.

One Saturday a month, they have a "work party" where volunteers help with chores such as cleaning, raking, painting, and gardening.

This is physical labor.

You might get dirty / sweaty.

The event involves:

- working at the shelter for a few hours

- potluck lunch at 1 pm

- optional tour of the shelter (see some animals up-close and take some photos)

FYI: Some animals might be friendly and comfortable with humans, but please be careful & vigilant when approaching and getting close to any of the animals because some might be scared, guarded, and defensive.

Reading their website is important:

I don't want anyone to waste time driving a long distance to find out their event is full, so please contact them to sign up.

Contact the coordinator, Sherri Nourse, to ask if room is available for volunteering at their "work party" in Acton.

Her contact info is:

If she says space is available, then fill out their application form -;jsessionid=FC1F436EF3313011AC62A65C8649CC01.app273a?ACTION_REQUIRED=URI_ACTION_USER_REQUESTS&SURVEY_ID=5980

For location, select "Acton, CA"

After submitting the online form, the farm animal shelter should confirm you are signed up successfully.

If anyone does not confirm with them, I don't know if they are strict, or if they turn people away who show up without RSVPing with them. again, please remember to contact them to sign up.

If their work party is full this month, ask Sherri to join her waiting list or sign up for another month in the future.

"For important safety reasons, individuals aged 12 to 17 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to work inside any animal housing barns."

"Children under 12 are not allowed to volunteer at the shelter."

This is far, so if other members sign up, maybe coordinate with one another regarding carpooling.

I went years ago and surprisingly, picking up poop, cleaning the pens/barns, and shoveling hay around was fun. haha.

And of course, seeing the animals up-close was cool too.

Tip: Wear clothes & shoes you don't mind getting dirty. And maybe bring extra clean clothes, socks, & shoes to change into afterward.

btw, in regards to their potluck lunch, they will send more info/details on what food to bring (i.e. vegan friendly).

If anyone isn't vegan or is unable to bring a vegan dish to share, then my guess is it should be okay to bring your own food/snacks for your own lunch.

Oh, and being vegan isn't required nor expected. I could be wrong, but I think they allow anyone to help volunteer.

But since some other volunteers might be vegan, they want their potluck lunch to accommodate their dietary restrictions/preferences. Thank you.
