Gallery themes, sliders, featured content, and slideshow plugins

Update: MediaTemple will be offering free food tonight!

It seems as though there's no end to the gallery themes, slideshow plugins, featured content sliders, etc. with WordPress, but how exactly do you put these into action? Sometimes those 'quick and easy' instructions aren't so quick or easy. And sometimes it's hard to figure out just where you go to customize the way your theme or plugin works.

At this meetup, your fearless organizers, Natalie MacLees and Noel Saw will be explaining and demoing the featured content, slider, gallery, and slideshow themes and plugins you want to use and making some recommendations of our own. Please post the themes and plugins you'd like to see explained and/or a brief description of the problem you're trying to solve and we'll tackle as many as we can, starting with the most popular requests first. Getting your request in by August 9 will give us the best chance of being prepared to show you what you need to know, so don't delay.

And finally we'll have a quick demo of the MediaPass plugin for WordPress that will allow you to monetize on premium content for your site with subscription plans. If you write great content, you can start charging for it easily with this plugin.

Thank you to the generous support of our sponsor, MediaTemple, we are able to offer this meetup free of charge for up to 80 people. Seats will go fast, so be sure to RSVP. Please, though, if you discover you cannot make it, update your RSVP to make room for someone else. If you're on the waiting list, don't despair - there's always a lot of shuffling about as we get closer to the event so there's still a great chance that you'll get a seat.

I have a website that is a wordpress template, and didnt really have very much info on how to navigate or how to do all the pictures. When I came out of the meeting I learned so much, and became confident about my wordpress template. Also I won a Wordpress Manuel Book from there raffle, which I love. Now if I have any simple queston they can always be answered :) Thank you so much :)

    Media Temple space absolutely ROCKS!

Noel made a valiant effort, but I fear wasn't dynamic enough and got a little lost in shuffling through very mediocre gallery themes.

MediaPass... I wish them all the success in the world but there are so many flaws in their approach, marketing and fee-structure, that one well made plugin would wipe them out.

Wow then Natalie saved the day with 2 plugins I'd overlooked and she was well prepared and had answers to almost every question.

I want to thank the organizers for setting up this event. It is no fault of theirs that I'm giving 2 stars. I found it exhausting when several people kept interrupting the talks, adding their own comments, challenging the presenters. I found it very distracting and at times there was a lot of anger expressed to not want to learn code or anything technical. I've been to several WordCamps and have never experienced this behavior. I was asking myself "what would Matt Mullenweg do in this situation?" I think we would have been appalled, but still keep his cool. :-) Having a Yes mind and can-do attitude is the culture of Wordpress that I like to focus on. I do hope that in future events, the presenters can finish what they have to say and then open it up for questions at the end of their presentation. This will allow others to share without making it distracting for the presenter and the audience.

All the presentations were really informative, and I came away with a lot of useful information, as usual - so thanks you Natalie and Noel for putting this together, and for inviting Matt too. MediaTemple is also a great venue - and thanks for all the pizza and drinks - you folks are so generous. But there were a couple problems - the reasons I give this meetup only a 3-star rating (instead of 5):
    1. No PA/talk too softly. It is hard to hear some speakers, and so much is lost to those in the back.
    2. Last nights meeting suffered from significant disruption from one or two individuals dominating not only others who wanted to ask questions, but even the speaker! You need to shut those people down when they dominate like that because they ruin it for everyone else. I suggest "let's take this discussion off line" or "I'll be happy to talk with you after the presentation to answer as many questions as I can".
Sorry if this is harsh, but it's important for the success of the meetup.

hi Shiho, I am going to bring some bananas, cookies and potato chips as snacks but for now we can't guarantee anything beyond that. So I'd suggest people grab a bite to eat first before the event.

Hello Noel/Natalie, is there going to be snacks/food before the event starts? I just want to know so I can grab something to eat after work before coming to the event if needed - thanks!

Hello Neil! Thesis and Genesis aren't on the agenda for tomorrow evening. We will be putting together a meetup on theme frameworks including both of those very soon so be sure to watch for the announcement.

Are either Genesis or Thesis framework part of this model?
