Social Media and WordPress

Social Media and WordPress

Leveraging social media to get people to your site is more than installing a Social Media share button. It is important to know how to generate traffic from social media and have people come back to your site. Social media and Search Engine Optimization are blending together; we will discuss what this means for your WordPress site. We will also share with you how to optimize your WordPress site so that your content gets shared more on social media and how to get your blog audience to come back. We will share with you what plugins to use for (social) commenting and how to partake or create your own blogging community with Triberr. This will be an action packed workshop for you as entrepreneur, marketer site owner, or developer that wants to learn the benefits of a social media optimized site.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who Is This For?
  • Developers that want to learn the benefits of being social media friendly
  • Entrepreneurs, Marketers, Site owners that need to take their site ‘social’
  • Bloggers that don’t want to miss out on building a bloggers community with Triberr
Parking and Location
Metered street parking is available on Hill and Broadway Streets. There is also a paid parking lot at 420 Bernard in Bamboo Plaza with reasonable rates, or another lot on Broadway. For public transit, we are a couple of blocks from the Chinatown Gold Line station, and multiple bus routes go up and down Hill and Broadway.
    Thanks for the great presentation! It gave me a few more things to learn about and study up on. I'd like to add a few technical footnotes.
    You can check if Google authorship is working on your site with their rich snippets tool:
    http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets
    Facebook also has a tool to check how your site appears with OpenGraph:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug
    I recommend the Yoast WordPress SEO plugin since it can add all the metadata you need for Google authorship, OpenGraph, and Twitter Cards, plus it's probably the best general SEO plugin.
    The meet up was really informative. I want to highlight that linkedin groups help with getting new clients, and triberrr.com worth a try to expand social influence dramatically via joining tribes. Two plugins are so good and worth a try: comment redirect and Disqus to engage users by managing active comments. I really enjoy the meetup and look forward to the next one. Thanks Natalie for having this happen, and thanks for sharing thgreat inform ation Marieke!
    I was going to ask about some RSS stuff - but Google just put a kill date on their reader. No doubt they are hoping to get those RSS lovers more involved with Google +. I believe that there is going to be a lot of interest in 3rd party RSS reader in the near future, so I would keep an eye on that for social media.
    For the woman who asked about "plug-ins" for video, I would recommend checking out fitvids.js - Personally, I use Advanced Custom Fields to provide a special field for the vimeo/youtube embed code, but what fitvids does - is expand the video to fill it's container so that you don't need to choose it's size. This is especially useful for responsive work, but also on olde tyme style sites as well. Strange size video is always a huge turn-off. I would recommend to just enqueue the script yourself, but there is also a "plug-in" version to help port it for those who have not yet learned how to build on the functions.php - good luck!
      Also thought that I would mention that those social media buttons and icons come with a whole lot of page weight. 1 facebook like icon is reported to send up to 15 http requests. You do the math. You can also think of creating your own like buttons and choose not to use images etc / pure css. Solid Presentation for sure on the overall, but there are a lot of issues with conditional loading etc that are more of a responsive design topic. PS don't show that only 3 people like your site... weight until a few hundred do before you put the number...
    This is awesome location for my first meetup with this group. I think I'll take the gold line down from Pasadena. Much better than having to drive and find parking.
    @Linda - There is free parking at many of the gold line stations and depending on where you are coming from/going to this could be an option for you instead of having to rely on street parking.
    See you all there!
    March 1, 2013
    • Wiseburn
      @Linda, Public Transit from the South Bay: Take the Green Line, to the Blue Line, to the Red Line to the Gold Line. Or catch an express bus downtown. I'm still waitlisted, but otherwise would drive from the same area.
      @Wiseburn -- thank you .... I had to change my reserv from "yes" to "no" on Sunday I think it was - hope you were able to get in. I'm so unfamiliar with public transit, I'm sure I would have been totally lost. LOL Next time!
    parkme.com is a handy site that shows you where parking is available, rates, and even how many spaces are available at the meters -- just plug in the address (418 Bamboo Lane, LA 90012) and it will show you all the options.
    Will there be any discussion about how to create the more complicated rss feeds required when using custom post types and advanced custom fields? or is this going to just be about the usual social media plugins?
    March 6, 2013
    • A former member
      A former member
      I won't be talking about how to create custom rss feeds as part of my talk. If this is something that comes up, sure we can discuss. :-) This is not just a plugin talk. I will be discussing how to optimize a site for social sharing, its about content, layout and yes plugins too, but also why it needs to go social & what it can mean for a site to make it more social - or what it means if you don't. :-)
    Regarding the parking --- how long can we park in the metered parking, and how far from meeting location - will it be long enough for the meeting? (So, how long will the meeting likely last?) How far are the paid parking lots from the meeting location --- and lastly, I'm not very familiar with "downtown" LA --- is it safe to walk as I will be by myself. (sorry if that's a stupid question LOL) Thank you so very much.
    March 1, 2013
      Our meetups usually wrap up around 9pm and then everyone chitchats for a bit. And it's perfectly safe to walk by yourself. I do it all the time.
