Networking with Film Students

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • In Orlando, Florida, there are four colleges and universities with robust film programs. These include Full Sail University and the University of Central Florida. Many of these schools' students don't know about Louisiana and think that they have to go to LA to be successful. A meetup there would be a great networking experience.

Hello Mr. Morgan, My name is Jonathan Avershal, and I am a Digital Media Production and Marketing major at Tulane University. I just started a Tulane Film Connection group on Facebook that I think would help immensely to connect Tulane Film students with community members in your meetup group. If you could PLEASE join the group and forward the link to your community that would be greatly appreciated. I believe that a better-connected film community in New Orleans will breed success in this industry.
    Here is the link:

    Thank you,

    Jonathan Avershal

Hi Ralph. I've ran across another school out of the Los Angeles area called the Film, Recording and Radio Connection. Think that's the right title. Are they decent? They're quite expensive I noticed. Or is this just someone out to make some money. It didn't look like they had any kind of college campus ... just film (or radio or recording)mentors in various cities you have to pay to work with. Do you know anything about the school If you don't wish to comment on here, send me a private message on the subject ... I'm considering them but unsure.

I have worked as an actor at both: Full Sail and UCF.(back in 1990`s/ Orlando, fla.) Both excellent film-programs.(I believe a Ralph Clemente (professional _film-director, taught at one of these schools.)

You could probably live in Idaho and become a successful person. The real question is what do you want to do. If you want to make your own films you can live wherever - you can use the money you're paying for school and invest it in your films. If you want to work for a big studio - quit school, save your money - go to Los Angeles or New York and meet people. This is a networking business. Meaning who knows you. It's tough, but you can do it, because it has already been done. You can get to know people in Louisiana as well and Georgia. But film crews usually happen in teams. Not that you can't get into a team - I'm just saying here the teams are sometimes already set, but in a place like L.A. or New York where work is created (the work in Louisiana is imported) you can get in on the ground floor. Now if you want to create your own work then Louisiana is a good place and so is Florida. The question is what do you want to do?

Hi. I'm going to try and make this one. I lived in Central and South Florida for almost thirty years before coming to New Orleans right after Katrina as relief worker. Obviously I ended up staying here. I've never visited Full Sail University which I believe is in Volusia Country (Daytona Beach area) somewhere but I've had quite a bit of contact with the University of Central Florida. It's a very good college but I didn't know until just know about a film program. I'll see if I can make this.

I just saw the meet up is being suggested THERE. I would NOT mind this at all as long as I get a month or two notice so I can get it together financially and lodging wise. I have friends in Florida and it would also give me a valid excuse to visit.

Can the person who is suggesting this idea get in contact with me … I'm the new organizer of the Short Films Group (in addition to the NOLA Screenwriter Meetup) and having a joint Meetup involving one of those schools might be a good idea. Also, Full Sail offers both traditional classroom and online instruction. Let me know if this would interest you.
