Pace: RLAG - Beginner pace but other groups may form. Intermediate pace for the intermediate ride
Distance: 4.5-15 miles
This will be a no-drop (no one left behind) ride that the route will be chosen by the group that forms each week between a dirt/gravel singletrack trail or a paved trail in combination with a Rail-Trail type gravel trail. At this point it will probably favor the least experienced and/or slowest (least fit) rider, but I'm also considering down the road switching to a schedule like Ft. Knox one week, Saunders the next, back to Ft. Knox and maybe one week a month strictly on paved road/trail so there is a little something for everyone. I'll admit that I am 200lbs. and an asthmatic, so I'm still low on the fitness level but my endurance and speed honestly has dramatically improved since I started cycling 4 years ago. I mostly want to have the time and place for women to ride in a comfortable, no pressure environment, and develop friendships and have fun together. It is fun to ride with the guys, but sometimes it is hard not to feel bad that they have to wait for us (me) to catch up. Besides, what is better than intermingling girl talk with a bike ride? (Or guy talk, just saying - Vince).
We have 2 basic options - Saunders Springs 3 mile Perimeter Loop is about 2-4 feet wide for a dirt & light gravel singletrack ride with some skill involved, as it is still being built and the kinks worked out. Some sections are off camber and you may have to get off in a few sections, but there are no major obstacles like logs or large rocks. This ride does include roots, rocks, and some hills so you need to have some aerobic conditioning. There are a few turns that are super tight, and a couple of steep sections that I still have to get off and walk so there is no shame in walking and taking breaks when necessary. I can also give some advice and instruction on how to ride over the roots & rocks.
The other option more for cruiser bikes and very beginner friendly - Knox Trails on Ft. Knox - ID required to get on post. There is a paved trail that we could stay on entirely, and there is a companion gravel trail that has more climbs but is still pretty fun. The trails are anywhere from 4-12 feet wide (paved is generally closer to 4-5 feet, gravel is wider). There are several additional options to make the ride lengthier and more difficult (which means more climbs, lol), and those that rode the gravel trails over the winter when the ground was too wet to ride Saunders tell me that they have much better endurance now. I could be coerced into getting fancy coffee at the Starbucks before we leave post since we'll go right by it. :-)
Wear shoes with good treads.
Wear biking gloves to protect your hands if you fall.
Bring a water bottle or other hydration pack to keep well hydrated.

1. Mountain bike in good working order (test ride your bike BEFORE you come. Make sure the brakes work well, the tires are properly inflated and the bike shifts properly into all gears. PLEASE - test ride your bike to make sure everything works properly.
2. Helmet. Its easy to forget to bring a helmet. You will need a helmet to ride with us. There may or may not be extra's available.
3. Bring water. Don't forget to bring ID and your insurance card in case of an emergency.
Finding Us - Meet the Outdoor Ventures bike shop. The parking lot is covered by security cameras and is well lit for rides during the Winter when it may get dark before we return. We'll ride up to either of the 2 trail options from there. There is also an Intermediate level ride at Saunders Springs that meets at the same time at the bike shop as well, and we will try to coordinate finishing times as best as we can with them (my hubby leads that one).
Those who are not KyMBA members are very welcome to join us but will be required to sign a liability waiver and a sign-in sheet.
