Makara beach coastal track (extended)

  • Makara Beach

    Makara, Wellington (map)

    -41.268753 174.705399

  • Description: The high cliffs and spectacular views that are features of Makara have for centuries provided the people of the area with good vantage points for the defence of their land. Makara Walkway is a 6 km loop, climbing to vantage points with spectacular views, and returning along the beach.

A Ngati Ira pa site lies on the promontory at the western end of Fisherman's Bay, and gun emplacements at the top of the cliffs mark the position of Fort Opau, which was garrisoned by 100 soldiers during World War II.

Plan: Starting at Makara Beach we'll walk along the coast before climbing up some steep hills till we reach the gun emplacements. We will then walk to the wind farms and Opau Bay finally returning along the coastline to Makara. Followed by drinks and curly fries at the Sprig & Fern!! :)

The walk is probably somewhere between 10-15 kms which should take 3-4 hours and we can stop for lunch somewhere along the way.

Bring: Sturdy, suitable footwear. Wind and waterproof jacket and layers of clothing. Snacks, lunch and water.

I hate having to cancel stuff but the weather is awful out there. It's tough standing still on the top of Mt. Victoria right now so it would too risky to walk at Makara. This is the second time I've had to cancel this walk at Makara because of the winds so the next time I put it up it will probably be a very short notice thing if I see the weather is good.

Sorry for any inconvenience it will cause and I hope everyone has a lovely Sunday :)

If Metservice's current prediction for tomorrow is accurate this walk will go ahead. However if it changes for the worse tomorrow morning I'll be cancelling it as it isn't safe walking on the ridge in strong winds. I'll be driving from Mt. Victoria around 9:30am tomorrow if anyone needs a lift. My number is[masked]
