7 days hiking and sightseeing on the spectacular Mediterranean coastline of South West Turkey
Fethiye to the West of the trail is known as the Turquoise Coast, with its majestic mountains, the numerous sandy beaches and ancient sites. The abundance of bays and islands many of which are hidden away on the rugged coast line creates an excellent basis for exploring this area on land and by sea
Explore ancient Lycian sites along the way and visit villages away from the beaten track
The Lycian Way is a long-distance footpath in Turkey around part of the coast of ancient Lycia taking its name from the ancient civilisation which once ruled the area
Listed by The Sunday Times as one of the world's top ten walks, it was officially opened as a way-marked route for trekking in 1999
My local knowledge of the area will ensure you will get to see and experience so much more
September is a great time to visit, the weather is around 25 degrees c and ideal conditions for walking
All the hikes are optional so if you want to spend a day relaxing at the beach or doing one of the other many activities on offer, no problem - this is your holiday!
Price £350 (excluding flights, these are self book)
Flights are approx. £140 return
After you RSVP yes, to secure your place you will need to pay a deposit of £50.00 and email your flight details to me once booked.
Hikes include the most famous leg of the Lycian way which affords stunning views, UNESCO heritage sites and amazing valleys, beaches and villages off the beaten track.
The route is mainly over footpaths and mule trails; it is mostly over limestone and often hard and stony underfoot.
The route is graded medium, it is not level walking and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
1 day boat trip to explore the bays and coves in the area including a visit to the stunning Butterfly Valley, Cold Water Bay and St Nicholas Island
1 day sightseeing to Pamukkale
Meaning "cotton castle" in Turkish, this is a natural location which is recognised as a World Heritage Site. The city contains hot springs and travertines, terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water.
1 day sightseeing to Saklikent Gorge
Saklikent (Hidden City) Gorge is approximately 20 km long of which 4km is accessible for walking. When you walk over the bridge to the entrance, the first thing that strikes you is the huge, 10 metre crevice in the rock. Then the vast sculpted walls towering high above and the sound of water rushing through the ravines. A must see amazing site
There will be opportunities for some free time for relaxing at the beach and a day for optional activities
We will visit some restaurants/bars some evenings for delicious Turkish food and entertainment and we will go to the famous Fish Market in Fethiye where we can select our own fresh fish from the day's catch to be cooked and eaten in one of the many surrounding restaurants, this has proved very popular on previous trips
Oludeniz - Kayakoy - Oludeniz (approx. 6 hrs Medium difficulty
Uneven paths with some loose scree and some steep ascents)
Starting from our accommodation we walk through the pine forest over the valley towards the deserted Greek Orthodox village, the subject of Louis de Bernieres' book ‘Birds Without Wings’. We will head to a local village cafe for lunch. After lunch we continue up over the hill to Oludeniz passing through the pine forests stopping to take in the spectacular views of the crystal clear bays and the blue lagoon at Oludeniz. Walking down to the shores of the lagoon, there will be time for a swim.
Kayaköy was adopted by the UNESCO as a World Friendship and Peace Village
Ovacik - Kozagac - Kirme - Faralya (approx. 7 hrs Medium difficulty
Long gradual ascent to Kozagac, path uneven)
Beginning at the original starting point of the Lycian Way, and the most famous leg we walk along goat paths, low scrubs and pine forests to arrive at the village of Kozagac, where we can see the remains of a massive rockslide, a result of the 1953 earthquake. We continue through fields to the tiny hamlet of Kirme and on via cobbled paths following the route down a deep valley carrying a millstream to Faralya, a farming and bee-keeping village lying along the cliff top road above Butterfly Valley.
The views as we walk up the mountain are magnificent
Faralya – Kabak Valley - Kabak Bay (approx. 5 hrs Medium difficulty)
Starting from where we left off in Faralya, we walk along the coastal path towards Kabak stopping by a delightful small cove before descending down to the beach at Kabak Bay where there will be time to have a swim and a drink at the bar.
