What we're about

MAKE! Chicago is a MAKER space in the heart of Bridgeport. We offer affordable access to our workshop to further the development of local creatives. Our shop is available for use to anyone, from the DIY / Hobbyist to professional craftsmen and artisans. We also offer classes, workshops, and Open Shop Nights to expand our community and encourage the development of new skills. Our shop is currently geared towards woodworking, sculpture, furniture making, and metal fabrication. We hope to add facilities and space for less "heavy duty" artistic pursuits such as crafting, painting and drawing, fiber arts, and anything else our community members can come up with. We are also constantly working to expand our educational programming, and welcome teachers to come to us with class ideas.

Open Shop Time

MAKE! Chicago

MAKE! Chicago is a community workshop with woodworking, welding, and metal fab tools. We offer affordable access to local artists and craftsman to explore, learn, create and grow. During Open Shop, authorized guests have access to our tools, space to work, and assistance from our staff and other community members to help take on larger, more ambitious projects. If you have a DIY project you've been meaning to get to, need a push in the right direction on how to build or fix something, or just don't have the tools to take on a new project, OPEN SHOP TIME is what you need in your life! Restore an old dresser! Reupholster old dining chairs! Build a table from old pallets! Lathe turn a home-made bat! Grab a pile of scrap metal and do some recreational welding! Create stretcher bars for a canvas! Grab a friend for creative bonding time. Whatever your project or idea, we have the tools and know how to help you be creative and successful. Guests may arrive and go anytime between 12 and 6. But we recommend getting to the shop as early as you can to make the best use of the space and get your money's worth. Prerequisites: You must complete our activity waiver (link Here: https://bit.ly/2Oi3xbD). We recommend doing that before you arrive, so it does not cut into your shop time. We strongly recommend everyone whom has an interest in using the space first participate in the monthly Shop Tour. During that activity you will get a sense of our space, facilities, tools, etequitte, and how to best prepare to use the shop safely and confidently. Authorizations are every FOURTH Tuesday of the month from 7 - 8:15. That said, if you are eager to use the shop, and can demonstrate competancy in the tools and techniques you wish to employ during Open Shop Time, we can usually work something out. Fees: $45 per person per day. We can accept cash, check, Chase Quick-Pay or Venmo. Materials included: LIMITED consumables are available, such as glue, screws, scrap wood and sandpaper. You must bring your own wood, metal, specialty materials, specialty hardware, adhesives, stains and finishes, consumables, etc. Instruction: This activity is SELF directed. We will point you in the right direction and assist as needed. But you are in charge of planning, designing, and building your project. A bit of advice: Make a plan and come prepared! Choose a simple project and make clear, achievable goals. Gather up the materials you need beforehand. Do some research on what you are trying to do. And feel free to reach out to us if you need assistance planning. We'll do the best we can to help you be prepared. Hope you can MAKE! it.
