Synthetic biology for computer programmers

  • Jun 8, 2013 · 8:00 AM

Dear ME2Bay Community,

John Cumbers is putting on a course that may be of interest to all of you.  Responding to the meet up does not equal registering for the course.  For more information, please visit the website for the course at http://synb.org.  A brief description is below:

"Synthetic Biology for Computer Programmers is a new course conceptualized and written by Dr. Josh Gilmore and Dr. John Cumbers. The course provides a one day interactive class for teaching synthetic biology to non-experts. The course is written for tech-professionals in other fields such as computer science, to learn about the growing power of biology to perform useful tasks and make high value products from drugs to spiders silk. We focus on analyzing the similarities and differences in our fields of study to make these lessons accessible, inspirational, and memorable."

Enjoy!

Positives: it brought together a strong group and provided good networking opportunities; it was fairly light and easily digestable; venure/layout/food good.

Negatives: too much time was spent on the science and not enough on the potential applications (if one of the main goals was to get non-biologists excited); did not show tech guys how they could get involved and contribute; no follow-up opportunities (networking, etc.).
