This was originally going to be a real backpacking trip to the hike-in only campground on Blind Lake. Well, they closed that campground a couple weekends ago to remove the fire rings. It's open now but no campfires are permitted! Anyone who's seen me build a fire knows what a pyro I am.
Instead of that, let's go to the Crooked Lake rustic campground in the same park. All are welcome, hikers and campers, not just backpackers. I'll still hike with a full pack but it's not required (I bought a big Gregory pack on eBay and this will be a chance to see how it feels :-)
Part 1 - 12:00 at Silver Lake day use area. There are two paved parking lots. Meet at the far back corner of the second parking lot, near the trailhead. We'll hike the Crooked Lake trail and most of the Silver Lake trail, about 6.5 miles. This is the route: 1 - 2 - 9 - 8 - 3 - 4 - 6 - 5 - 7 - and back to 1.
Part 2 – 3:30, short drive to the Crooked Lake campground, sites 21 & 22 on the water. It's about a mile past the day use area. Setup tents, send out firewood parties, cook late lunch/dinner on your camp stove.
Part 3 - 7:00, get a good fire going. Visitors are welcome to come out if you bring a folding chair. Optional: drinks, snacks and s'more stuff!
Part 4 - sleep in a tent. Now's your chance to find out if you can actually sleep on a thermarest z-pad! In the morning, make breakfast, pack up tents, pick up the site and go home. We'll probably be out by Sunday 11:00 am.
