Damn Cold Hiking at Highland Recreational Area (6-8 miles ~ 2.5-3 hours)

  • Jan 26, 2014 · 12:00 PM

I originally, and accidentally, set this hike for the wrong date.  So, please make sure you have the correct date.  This hike (Highland) will be on Sunday 1/26/14.  I will be posting another hike for Sunday 2/2/14 within the next few days.

What is the plan?

Well, it is supposed to be in the single digits on Sunday which probably means that it will be sunny and beautiful out, assuming you can see anything through all of the layers you will be wearing to keep warm.  I plan on hiking along the mountain bike trails at Highland Rec for about 2.5- 3 hours at a moderate pace, with breaks for snacks and water.  The mileage is dependent upon the condition of the trail and there are multiple loops so you can cut back early.

Where do we meet?
At the parking area on the north side of Livingston road just west of Duck Lake Road.  Duck Lake Road is about 1.5 miles west of the main entrance to Highland Rec off of M-59.  Please look at the maps below to get your bearing- you are not going to the main entrance of the park.

Costs:
This is a state park so you need the Recreation Pass on your license plate.  If you do not have a Pass, the worse that happen is a ranger will put a ticket on your car and you will have to pay the $11 for the pass.

Answers to Common Questions:
- Dogs are allowed, so are cats, birds, hamsters, llamas, and orangutans.  Please inquire about any other animal.
- Bring snacks and water.
- The only reason that weather will cancel the hike is if it keeps me from driving there.... or if brimstone falls from the sky- I really do not like brimstone.

Afterwards:
A celebratory drink and food at Billy's Tipin Inn
It is about 2.5 mile east on M-59/Highland Road.  It is on the left (north) side right just past Meijer and Bogie Lake Road.

address: 6707 Highland Road, White Lake, MI

For those that couldn't make the hike today, you missed out on a beautiful trail that Charlie picked out for us today. There was fresh air, glistening snow and good company! Cheers!

Very enjoyable! Wouldn't it be great if this weather lasted all year round?

Major accident on 23n. Standstill traffic. Doesn't look like I'm gonna make it. :( I'll have to find another way to get frostbite today. Have fun!

Been recovering from a cold for a few days and am still not 100%. I'll stay home rather then share my sick with everyone.

Bundle up - no skin left exposed and we can be the faceless hikers. Snow coming down so bring some goggles or sun glasses to protect your eyes from those silly snowflakes. See ya soon.

Have to cancel, but someone should really get the shepherd's pie at Billy's. You know it's good food when you wake up thinking about it. Yum.

Well my Iphone is saying it's going to hit 20 degrees Sunday which should feel like a heatwave.

Dang, if the forecast gets any warmer, I might have to cancel the hike. Or maybe just change the name.

    'Damn cold hike" That's funny!

Hey Charley, don't know if you cancelled and did a new one intentionally, but you can just change the date on an existing MeetUp.

    January 21, 2014

    • Charlie

Yeah, it was intentional. I wanted to make sure people could read the warning that I made a mistake on the original, and cancelled, event for those who click on the first email. Otherwise, the email would take them to the changed event without saying it was changed.
