Wadjda - Foreign Film (Tomatometer 99% on Rottentomatoes.com) Meetup #1

Karlee is the organizer for this meetup.  If you need to contact her please post a message on the wall.

Comments: Looks like a moving story and I am interested in learning more about the culture of Saudi Arabia. The language spoken is Arabic. There will be English subtitles.

Synopsis: WADJDA is a movie of firsts. This first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia is the story of a young girl living in a suburb of Riyadh determined to raise enough money to buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl's virtue. Even more impressive, WADJDA is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. In a country where cinemas are banned and women cannot drive or vote, writer- director Haifaa Al Mansour has broken many barriers with her new film.

I so enjoyed this film. It was beautifully understated, dealing with the ordinariness of life for Saudis in a sensitive way that lent itself to more universal interpretations.

Dinner after with our small group proved to be most convivial. Thank you, Karlee for organising this.

A friendly group with an active discussion before and after the movie. Dinner at Tabule was a treat. A movie that is simple yet sweet. It reminds me how fortunate I am to be raised in a household that is not gender biased nor restricted because of my religion. Thank you for your wonderful company as always.

I caught this gem at the Varsity on Tuesday. You can`t not enjoy it. And if you are female, thank your lucky stars you grew up in Western freedom.

Thank you Phil for letting me know. The movie will no longer be showing at the Varsity theatre after Thurs, Oct 24. It is only showing at Canada Square as far as I can tell. To avoid disappointment in case it does not show on Nov 2, I have decided to watch the movie earlier. Hope you can join me.

Oh yeah, I saw the trailer tonight before Watermark. I guess some theatres put out their updated schedule earlier than others. Maybe I'll do that one at Canada Square, it looks good.

I was thinking of doing this next Tuesday. I looked at Cineplex's schedule, which was updated for Varsity, and its no longer playing beyond Thursday. I thought Carlton might pick it up, but it's not listed as a coming soon film.

I just checked and you are right about the Varsity theatre. Canada Square at Yonge and Eglinton is showing it up till Oct 31. I may move the meetup earlier. Thanks Phil.
