Join us for the Austrian film at this year’s Toronto European Union Film Festival (EUFF): “Mademoiselle Paradis” (in German: »Licht«). Directed by Barbara Albert ( and starring Maria Dragus, Devid Striesow, Lukas Miko, Katja Kolm, and Maresi Riegner, this 2017 drama tells the story of blind pianist Maria Theresia von Paradis ( “Vienna, 1777. Maria Theresia (“Resi”) Paradis, 18 years old, is blind, and a pianist of remarkable talent. Resi lost her eyesight literally overnight when she was three. After countless failed medical experiments, her overprotective parents seek out a controversial “miracle doctor,” Franz Anton Mesmer, as their last hope for a cure. For Dr. Mesmer, the chance to successfully treat the young girl could lead to fame and fortune.” (Nikolaus Geyrhalter Filmproduktion GmbH)

The film was part of the Platform competition at TIFF last year, won 5 awards at the 2017 Austrian Film Awards, and was best film at the Saxony-Anhalt Film Arts Days 2017. The running time is 97 minutes and the movie will be shown with English subtitles.
