Beginning Carving Class
This class will help the student learn blade control, sharpening knives and chisels, types of chisels and their use. Starting with a simple project will give student all of these skills and the confidence to challenge themselves.
WHEN: Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday starting on August 3rd, at 7:00pm.
Our first project will be a choice of a chain or a ball in a cage. These projects are some of the beginning carvers standard. These will be in basswood a softer easily carved wood, and will be provided for you.
The blank will be roughed out so you can start carving the first night. We will go over the fundamentals of keeping a sharp edge on your tools. Safety concerns during your caving sessions.
Suggested tools and equipment:
• a glove(cut resistant),
• thumb guard(can be made first night I can bring
materials for those who want to make one),
• small bladed knife( x-acto knife is a good starter),
• small chisel set, those who are just exploring this art can use a tool of mine(limited number).
A great starter knife set can be obtained from harbor freight for 2.99, they also have good starter chisel sets and hobby knife sets for under 20.00.
Material fee: $2.00
Suggested donation: $10.00
Those who want to be challenged at the start can layout their blank or use a predrawn blank(let me know which you need). For those that want to continue I will be offering starting classes in relief carving, caricature, 3d carving. Chip carving, love spoons, possibilities are endless.
As classes get more advanced classes they will be more discussion and demonstration
