How do you relate to the term "geekery" or "geek"?

I define a geek as a person who does not conform to the general American culture of cool detachment from and vague antipathy toward ideas and intellectual pursuits, who doesn't fear standing out by displaying his or her passion for the (often whimsical) life of the mind. I look to learn about and understand many things, which seems to make me stand out and I think makes me a geek.

What are some of the activities that you enjoy doing? (You may wish to share, in particular, any that might be considered geeky.)

I like designing, building and repairing things, so I enjoy sailing not only for the activity itself, but also the associated tasks of fiberglass repair, engine maintenance, canvaswork/sewing, marlinspike work, electronics and electric systems, navigation. I get into computers with fooling with and using Linux, Unix-like and other alternative operating systems. And, in general, I love exploring and pondering the 'why' behind everything: physics, philosophy, psychology, law, art, et cetera.

What are a few of your favorite things? (Book titles, games, places, movies, tv shows, restaurants, band names, brown-paper-packages-tied-up-with-string, etc.)

Sailing, bicycling, canoeing, train travel; Babylon 5, Archer, Arrested Development; Shearwater, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, Pert Near Sandstone, Kathleen Edwards. To name a few.

In joining Geekery, what type of meet-ups are you hoping to find? (Gaming, evenings out, new restaurants, trivia, movies, outdoor stuff, museums, etc.)

I'm a near-life-long Madison resident who still doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up. I've recently returned to school to finish a B.S. started long ago.
