Elastic and the Enterprise – Elasticsearch at Sentry Insurance

Rob and Jared will walk through Sentry Insurance’s journey to Elasticsearch, from idea through implementation. The primary focus will be on Elastic Stack and it’s use in an enterprise logging solution but we will also touch on additional use cases as Sentry looks to incorporate Elastic as a key platform in our next generation application stack.

Sentry Insurance is a mutual insurance company based in Stevens Point, WI (with several branch office locations throughout the country, including Madison) that offers life, group health, auto, and other property/casualty lines.

Rob Baxter is an Infrastructure Operations Manager at Sentry Insurance whose responsibilities include the Sentry Application Platform Services and Enterprise Monitoring groups. The Platform Services group is responsible for day to day administration of Sentry’s .NET and Java applications, distributed messaging platforms (RabbitMQ), source control, and Elasticsearch clusters. Rob received a BS in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999 and worked as a web application developer before moving into the information security arena. He spent several years doing penetration testing and working with a number of log analysis/SIM/SEIM tools and doing system administration on Sentry’s Linux/Jboss application servers before moving into his current role.

Jared Kauppila is a Senior Platform Engineer based in Sentry’s Steven’s Point Home Office. As a primary application support specialist, Jared saw firsthand the inefficiencies of a decentralized logging approach and was the primary advocate for Sentry to pursue an Elastic Stack solution. When not answering questions about Elasticsearch or Logstash for the rest of the enterprise, Jared is assigned to Sentry’s cloud & colocation initiative and working to develop the automation tooling that will support Sentry’s infrastructure operations as we transition out of our traditional on-premises data centers.
