  • Yarn Crafting: Now at Vilas Park

    Vilas Park, sorta

Hello all! Now that summer is here again, we're going to occasionally meet at the park again! The location for this one is Vilas Park, although we're technically on Edgewood's "Pleasant View Drive," if anyone needs the distinction. The park does not contain food, but you're welcome and perhaps even encouraged to bring some along with you. You might also want a blanket/chair/thing to sit on because this is Unpredictable Nature we're dealing with here. Speaking of unpredictable, if the weather is rainy, then our back-up location is Zuzu Cafe on the corner of Vilas and Drake (at the other end of the zoo) We will also be officially starting this meetup at 600, rather than 630, since the sky gets dark at night (stupid sun going down). So, we're going to meet at 6pm sharp in the back parking lot of Vilas park. We'll walk as a group into the woods a few minutes after 6. Some Fairly Useful Directions to the Parking Lot: Turn off Monroe St onto Edgewood Ave, follow it into Vilas Park; there's a parking lot on the left just after the tree line near where Vilas Park Dr and Edgewood Dr meet (before the bridge; don't go over the bridge! You can't come back from that!). Edgewood Dr/Pleasant View Drive is a car-free road-thing that looks like a continuation of the bike path. Alongside the path are some nifty little docks that jut out into the water, one of which has some benches that we like to commandeer for crafty purposes. If you're late, and we've already left the parking lot, you'll want to go counterclockwise around Lake Wingra from the parking lot, looking to the left for foot paths and/or fellow knitters. One last note: this is "wilderness" or at least it may contain mosquitoes and unfiltered sunlight, so plan accordingly. There are a few benches, but depending on the weather they get damp, so you may wish to bring a chair (we won't be that far from the parking lot), or a blanket (which is also helpful so you don't drop your knitting needles through the boards of the dock).

  • Eastside Stitchers

    Mickey's Tavern

Note: A core group of 6-12 stitchers attend each week without RSVP'ing. Don't be discouraged if you see only "Fibre Forward Inc" signed up. There's always a group of us there. Please always feel free to message us here! Meet in the back room of Mickey's Tavern. The glowing owl lamp marks our tables. The bar knows us, and we're more than welcome to hang out. Mickey's has well-priced draft beers, bar food, and a super welcoming neighborhood vibe. NOTE: CASH ONLY! They have an ATM inside. New/beginner-friendly. Can't afford supplies? Need instruction? No problem. Message us. We host this group as a part of Fibre Forward, which is specifically designed for access to knitting and crochet resources at no cost, among other fiber arts. We're happy to take time in our circle to teach you, too. Optional Charity Project through Fibre Forward: Most Eastside Stitchers consistently partake in community-oriented knitting / crochet projects. Since we don't have a formal agenda or program for our Wednesday night, it's up to you if/when you'd like to participate. Basically, the idea is to consistently have a charity project on the needles/hook. We just completed and mailed a bunch of blue hats for Lion Brand Yarn's Hat Not Hate project to raise awareness around bullying. Our current project is making little Kindness Monsters. The goal is to release a little kindness into the wild in these later summer months! To get the free pattern and learn more, check out this awesome initiative: https://www.kindnessmonsterproject.com/ If you need any materials, please reach out!

  • Third Stitchers Book Club: Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

Ok! Welcome to the third Stitchers Book Club! This time we're reading a muder-mystery by Anthony Horowitz called Magpie Murders (here's a goodreads link for more information: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32075854-magpie-murders). We meet at Bloom Bakery, which is amazing and has delightful food of many varieties for sale. We don't tend to get a lot of yarn crafting done, but you are definitely encouraged to bring your project and work on it while there (I bring mine!). Because we're a bit focused on the book, this is not a great meet-up for beginners (or people who haven't read it), though you are thusly encouraged to join us for one of our regular meet-ups. Anyway, read Magpie Murders, and come join us! It'll be fun!

  • Yarn Crafting at Colectivo

    Colectivo Coffee

This is a normal, regular yarn-crafting meetup to which you may bring whatever yarn or fiber craft your heart is crying out for (or even other forms of arts and crafts, all are welcome). There is usually at least one of us there early (me, it's me), if you'd like to come and eat before the "official" start time, and Colectivo has a fairly decent dinner menu, as well as a couple beers on tap, and a full cafe menu of coffee and baked goods and...fair trade mints or whatever, I don't know. All ages and stages are welcome to our meetup, although if you're a true beginner, we'd like it if you can mention that in the comments for this meetup, so that someone can come prepared to teach (or else there'll be a Beginner's Workshop in early January, and you can wait for that). Side note: Colectivo closes at 8, which is earlier than the other places we meet (we generally break up by or around 830 elsewhere), so please plan accordingly if that will affect your crafting enjoyment or transportation needs.
