CNC Meetup

CNC -- or Computer Numerical Cotrol -- is the term used to describe shop machines that are automated, as opposed to manual machines. Tools that have historically been manual, like milling machines, lathes, routers, etc. can all be CNC machines too, which makes fabricating things much easier. The basic process involves creating a 2D or 3D design in a CAD program, and then using CAM programs to create toolpaths, which are then used to instruct the machine how to operate. Simple, right?

At our CNC meetups, we'll talk about general CNC operations, give an explanation of CAD and CAM, and will feature demonstrations of CNC router capabilities on a large ShopBot wood router, as well as our small-scale desktop machine. We will hold this event every other Thursday, covering a different topic each time. For the night of 2/23, the primary focus will be on bits and tooling. While we can't allow inexperienced users to operate the heavy machinery, we can let you watch, ask questions, and learn.

Also, come see our very own "Orange CNC" desktop milling machine in action and meet people who've built their own. This device uses the principles of CNC and operates on a desktop scale, using a Dremel tool to carve, engrave, and mill wood, plastics, foam, and circuit boards.
