Makom Ohr Shalom is a Jewish congregation affiliated with ALEPH (The Alliance for Jewish Renewal) focusing on the spiritual, meditative, and healing traditions/teachings of Judaism. Jewish Renewal combines elements of Reform Judaism, Reconstructionism, and Hassidic tradition, and is described on the Aleph website, https://www.aleph.org/ , as "seeking to renew Judaism and bring its spiritual and ethical vitality into our lives and communities, and at the same time embrace a global vision of the role of all human beings and spiritual paths in the transformation of life on this precious planet."
At Makom Ohr Shalom, we seek to enhance and renew our personal and collective relationship with HaShem through joyful music, prayer and torah study within a warm and supportive community. We provide a loving home for the heart, the spirit and the body.
Religious Services: Makom Ohr Shalom services are unique, brimming with music, joy, spirit, and community. We hold services are on the first and third Fridays of each month as part of an interfaith community at our regular sanctuary in Encino, and often hold services on 4th Fridays at Rabbi/Cantor Monty Turners home in West Los Angeles. Services incorporate meditation, chanting original and traditional melodies, playing musical instruments and even some dancing. You don't have to be Hebrew literate to enjoy our services. Our prayer book includes Hebrew, English and transliteration for every prayer. If the liturgy is unfamiliar, you're encouraged to hum along. All our services conclude with an oneg, featuring desserts, fellowship and informal schmoozing. Our annual High Holiday services have been honored for many years by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, the founder of Renewal Judaism, who co-leads some of the services with our regular clergy.
Other Events: We conduct regular distance healing sessions, and classes in Interfaith Meditation (with Bethel Lutheran Church), torah study, and Jewish Liturgical Music. Each month, there is a musical nursing home shabbat visit, and a Rosh Chodesh Women’s group.
