This is one our easier hikes as we hike the Boney Mountain area starting at the trailhead off of Wendy and Potrero. We will keep this short in the 7 miles range.

Our hikes are afternoon conditioning hikes for people hiking at an intermediate level or above, and enjoying time outdoors with fun and friendly people sharing similar interests and fitness goals.

Our hike format emphasizes easy-to-access and scenic 5-8 mile Malibu-area conditioning routes with[masked] foot elevation gains, a relatively fast pace with a single rest stop, and optional technique discussions and conditioning exercises (based on individual and group interest). Total hiking time is normally 2.5-3 hours.

We schedule our hikes as late in the day as the season allows, minimizing hiking in the dark while encouraging people with a variety of schedules to get one or more conditioning hikes in during the week and tune-up for bigger adventures.

Here is info on our scheduled hike…hope to see you there!

Route summary:

This hike will take us 6-8 miles roundtrip on a scenic trip around the northwestern end of the Santa Monica mountains, offering great views of Point Mugu, the Pacific, and the offshore islands. Our route and total distance can vary based on the group, available time, and weather conditions. We will generally choose routes with extra elevation gain, to complement the open and rolling paths of this area. Overall, the mix of hills and open paths will provide us with an opportunity for a fairly fast-moving and quite scenic afternoon hike.

Our route begins on flat and fairly wide paths, as we make our way for a mile or more into the reservation from the parking lot on Potrero Road. Our general movement will be east, toward an ascent of the hills of Point Mugu State Park, with the option of taking one or more cross paths through the gathering foothills. Route options include detouring south across Sycamore Canyon and taking the fairly athletic access road and Fossil Trail. After completing our ascent, we loop back in a westerly direction until we reach Potrero Road, again with the option of varying our route via cross paths.

Most of this hike is hilly or rolling trail, with a mix of tree-shaded and bushy terrain. Weather can range from calm and humid to misty with ocean winds to quite warm and dry conditions. We will stop at or near the height of our ascent to grab a snack and enjoy the great late afternoon views, before making our descent.
