Here is info on our scheduled hike…hope to see you there!
Chumash Trail/Point Mugu Loops
Hike Type: Conditioning
Route Type: Lollipop or out & back
Distance: 7 miles
Elevation gain:[masked] feet
Terrain: Trail & fire road
Dogs allowed: No
Our hike will take us 7 miles roundtrip, usually on one of several possible loops at the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains. All the routes involve ascending and/or circumnavigating Mugu Peak and offer terrific Pacific views.
Our route will begin at the Chumash Trail trailhead off Pacific Coast Highway, and proceed northerly and steeply up for about a mile to a ridgeline below Mugu Peak. Once we reach the ridgeline, we have the option of turning easterly to summit or loop in front of Mugu Peak or continuing north into La Jolla Valley. If we head for La Jolla Valley, we will normally loop around and summit Mugu Peak via one of several trails of increasing distance, but have the option of doing an out and back as well.
However we make our way to Mugu Peak, we will enjoy the amazing views there and return back via the Chumash Trail. Though a shorter, steeper, slightly lesser known trail than the nearby Ray Miller Trail, the Chumash Trail nevertheless offers excellent views of the Pacific on our way down.
The initial section of our hike is on open hillsides and ridgelines immediately exposed to the ocean, as are our routes to and around Mugu Peak. If we go into La Jolla Canyon, the area is more protected from the ocean and can be warmer. Since we begin at the beach and reach exposed areas immediately above the Pacific, as well as areas some distance from the ocean, weather can range from calm and humid to misty with ocean winds to quite warm and dry conditions.
We will stop at Mugu Peak and/or a secondary point if we enter La Jolla Valley or circumnavigate Mugu Peak, to grab a snack and enjoy the great views.
Please wear – brush-resistant pants, one or more wicking shirts appropriate to the temperature, comfortable hiking shoes or light boots, your favorite undergarments and accessories, and a light backpack.
Please bring – at least two liters of water, snacks, an extra layer of clothing, a charged cell phone, identification, a headlamp, a small first-aid kit, bug repellant and sunscreen, a waterproof shell if rain is forecast, and any medications or anything else you might need on the trail.
There is free daytime parking in the Chumash Trail parking lot on the north side of the Pacific Coast Highway.
Please do not leave anything of value in your car, at this or any other trailhead.
From the west – Take PCH east from Camarillo. The Chumash Trail parking lot is about 2 miles east of Las Posas Road on the north side of PCH. Turn left when you reach the parking lot entrance, which is across the street from a lookout tower and parking lot on the south side of PCH.
From all other directions – Take your favorite way to PCH and go west. The Chumash Trail parking lot is on the north side of PCH, about 23 miles west of Malibu Canyon Road and 13 miles west of Decker Canyon Road (Route 23). Turn right when you reach the parking lot entrance, which is across the street from a lookout tower and parking lot on the south side of PCH.
