Bush-Craft Camp

  • 4 days ago · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Let's put our bush-crafting skills to the test. As a group, let's create a primitive working campsite and then hang out in it for the day. This will be a great opportunity to hang those tents, tarps & hammocks, do some exploring and practice some serious camp-craft on over 60 acres of wild Florida Woodland.  There are fire rings on site and enough trees for hammocking. It will be nice fraternizing with other like minded folks while sharing stories and learning skills from each other.  Those who wish can stay the night in your preferred camping sleep arrangements.  I know I will.   If anyone would like to incorporate their own training into this two day camping extravaganza, post it here.  See you there....

Well for all those who couldn't come, ya missed out! Manatee Search and Rescue came and taught us land navigation. Great information and hands on. We took a stab at fishing in the pond. Will, demonstrated how to make a camp chair. Then we ate by the fire and fellow shipped until our eyelids started closing. Best to you all in the journey of self reliance. Certainly will miss this group and the friends I made.

Sorry Will, I started a new job this week and haven't even packed yet, so I'm going to bail. See you at the hog hunt.

Just an FYI, Manatee County Search and Rescue will still be teaching land navigation, to include a basic navigation map & compass course. Bring a compass please.

It hasn't rained in Myakka since summer so I wouldn't be surprised if the small creek on this property has dried up. At that point, the only natural water source would be the lily pad pond. Please pack accordingly.

Hey I'm new to the this group and to bradenton but I would love to join you all, if that's alright. Camping, hiking, fishing and pretty much anything outdoors are all things I really enjoy

I don't believe we're going to have a (pre)meet-up where we go over what to bring and what we'll be doing. As such, please refer to the pages section for my load-out. Here's a link... http://www.meetup.com/Manatee-County-Survival-Training/pages/20360336/My_Back-Pack_load-out_list

If you're unfamiliar with camping, you can use my load out as a basic framework guide for what to bring for overnighting. I'll bring a shovel and we can set up a dedicated camp privy area. The schedule is kind of loose, but I believe land-navigation instruction, fishing and bush-craft chair construction are on the menu. If anyone else has any training ideas, please post them here.

I'm bringing my backpacking gear and either hammock or tent.

I scouted the camping area today. It has a sandy bottom stream cutting through. That'll be our water source. There's an overgrown bass pond near by that's ripe for worm fishing. A fire ring was present too. Anyone brave enough for a fresh fish dinner cooked over the fire? I suspect there will be a lot of mosquitoes, so bring bug spray.

I talked to Kevin today and it looks like MCSRT may be able to teach land navigation during this meet-up. Thanks Kevin!

I've secured a 70 acre wooded location for this meet-up. This is going to be good training and a great time. If all goes well, we may turn this into an annual jamboree for our group.
