What we're about

Manchester Hash House Harriers (MH3) is a social, non-competitive running/walking group founded in 2012. We are part of the worldwide Hash House Harriers, which was founded in 1938 and has over 70,000
members.

Our hashers come in all ages, shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. We welcome all dawdlers, walkers, joggers and runners as well as four legged friends.

All you need is an open mind and a sense of humour. Our goal is to bring together locals and those new to Manchester to socialise and explore the green areas around Greater Manchester, to get outside and active and to meet new people and make new friends.

We meet on the 2nd Saturday and the 4th Sunday of every month at 14.00 with venues close to tram/train stations. We hold quarterly City Centre trails with a bigger "social " emphasis.

The cost is £3 per hash attendance. You get a free beer/drink on your first trail.

The Hash is a trail based “Hare and Hounds” run, walk or crawl. It will generally start and finish at a pub chosen by the hare (the one who sets the trail). The hounds, or pack, ( the runners/walkers) set off after an explanation of the trail markings or “chalk talk”. The trails are marked in flour or sawdustthough if in a city chalk markings may be used due result of current national security concerns.

A hash trail will consist of false trails, checkpoints, waiting points, etc. which occupy front-runners sometimes known as FRBs (Front Running Bastards), who start searching for the new trail. This can be in any direction, along paths, streets, up rivers and streams, through tunnels or up the side of a hill. Once the true trail is found the words “on on” are shouted so the whole pack knows which way to go.

The time taken by the front-runners to find the new trail allows the runners/walkersat the back to catch up thus, increasing the chances of everyone reaching the end at roughly the same time with the fitter possibly having gone twice as far! It is possible that one minute you are leading the pack but the next you are at the back having gone down a false trail and then have to catch up with the pack.

MH3 hash trails are usually around 8-10 km (5-6 miles) though shorter in winter. We return to the starting venue after a drink stop somewhere en route. There will be a “circle” at the end to reward or reprimand hashers for their behaviour on the hash trail. All is in good fun so a sense of humour is imperative. The rewards/reprimands are the same and involving beer or soft drinks for any drivers. Post-circle revelries are up to the individual but it has been known for some muddy sweaty hashers to be turned out of the pub at closing time.

Hashing allows you to leave your everyday life for fun and laughter with a group of like-minded people. It has created a kinship that knows no geographical bounds of hospitality. You're as welcome at one group as any other.
