Sharing the Hidden World: How to Write & Submit Poetry (with Michael Lyle)

If you’ve had a longing to express yourself through poetry, or perhaps have a little stash of poems tucked away in a desk drawer, this workshop is for you! Led by Loudoun poet Michael Lyle, we will explore the craft and mystery of writing poems. We will write some poems together, discuss the writing life, explore the evolution of a poem from idea to finished creation, and then discuss how to get your poems out into the world. Michael will modify the focus of the workshop based on the interests of the participants. This workshop is for anyone interested in learning more about writing poetry and submitting it for publication. Please bring a notebook & pen and a bag lunch. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Exploring Creative Nonfiction (Part 1): Mining for Story Gold

The poet Emily Dickinson wrote, “Tell all the Truth but tell it Slant / Success in Circuit lies.” In creative nonfiction we tell the truth, but we tell it through the lens of our experience, observation, and imagination. In other words, we tell a story! In this 8-week series, we will begin to excavate the rich vein of story gold that lies at the heart of our lives. We will grapple with the body, the family, the physical world, the spiritual realm, and much more. We will write together in the workshop as well as at home, and there will be plenty of opportunities to share what you have written and receive helpful feedback. There also will be an opportunity for manuscript review for those who wish it. This Amherst Writers & Artists workshop is open to writers at any level of experience. Please join us! Text: We will be using the third edition of Tell It Slant: Creating, Refining, and Publishing Creative Nonfiction by Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paola. Please purchase the book and bring it with you to the first meeting. Cost: $250 for the 8-week session, which ends 12/17/19. To register, visit www.marketstreetwriters.com.
