What we're about

Welcome to Mark's Role Playing Games meetup group. This group is for anyone interested in any kind of pen & paper role playing game.

I am Mark, the creator and responsible person for this meetup group. With my group I want to focus primarily on quality instead of on quantity. I think that's important. Not just in role playing games, but also in regards to my leadership of this group. I want my group to be as transparent and fair as possible.

For some background information and more about the group, please see the group webpage: http://www.MarksMeetup.com

Finding players and Dungeon- or Game Masters isn't always easy, even when you're still a kid or a teenager, and for adults, it can become nearly impossible. That's what meetup groups and online event management such as Meetup.com help with tremendously.

Playing role playing games is not a new phenomenon. It started in the 70's in the USA with Dungeons & Dragons (sorry for mentioning it for those who prefer other games), and while still broadly unknown in Europe back then, there are some older players, mostly English speaking ones, who would still like to play today. Great I say! Old School Revival! :-) I want to welcome particularly them in this group!

Thanks to Meetup.com, it is much easier to connect with other players. But, as anyone who has played with a few different Game- or Dungeon Masters will notice, there are vastly different styles of play. And different age groups sometimes have different things they find entertaining. While it can be refreshing and fun for people over 40 or 50 to play with teenagers, it's just not the same as when playing with one's own age group. And sometimes older players just like the company of other players in their age. That can be hard to find in groups that don't cater to these needs of older players. With Mark's Role Playing Games I would like to remedy this situation.

Because I have been a Dungeon Master myself, I know how tedious, time-consuming and sometimes even a burden Dungeon- or Game Mastering can be. Especially if done right and for extended periods of time. No wonder there are almost always enough players, but often not enough Dungeon- or Game Masters. That's why in my group I will also particularly cater to the needs of Dungeon- and Game Masters. I will try to promote and support them in any way I can, and, while I might ask players for a small contribution to help pay the Meetup.com fees, in all fairness, I will never ask that of Dungeon- or Game Masters.

Outdoor Survival

Badstrasse 33

Can you survive the wild? Are you a Dungeon- or Game Master looking to break out from the boring old dungeon-crawl, "You see a stair leading down to the next level with a door at the end."? Outdoor Survival by Avalon Hill is a hex-based board game from 1972 and it is the blue-print which Gary Gygax's original Dungeons & Dragons copied from and got inspired by for its own outdoor exploring and adventuring! :-) - In the small wood grained 1974 box with the three booklets inside, page 5 of "Men & Magic" states the game "Outdoor Survival" is also required for play. And if I recall correctly, the DMG of 1st Ed. AD&D also mentions the game. If you wanted to add some outdoor traveling and exploring variety to your campaigns or one-shots for a long time, or if you want to study the history and development of the world's first commercial role playing game Dungeons and Dragons and consult ITS original sources (!), or even if you just want to try this game and see what it's like, here's your chance! I got myself a copy and to kick off my Role Playing Games meetup group, I'd like to play one or two games with a total of 4 players at my place. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I suppose that will take about 3 - 4 hours. We'll see...! :-) From the manual: "OUTDOOR SURVIVAL is a simulation of the essential conditions for staying alive when unprotected man is beset by his environment. It recreates real world conditions of the wilderness, and places trained and untrained people in emergency situations. (...)". :-) For more info about the game read a review here: https://centurionsreview.com/outdoor-survival/outdoor-survival-review/ Event Conditions ******************* Maximum Participants: 4 Age Preference: 30+ Location: Mark's apartment in 5200 Brugg Language: English Duration: 3-4 hours Alcohol or Marijuana: No please Cigarettes: Smoking is possible during breaks on balcony. Dungeon- and Game Master's Roundtable

Universitätstrasse 91

The Dungeon- and Game Master's Roundtable is a social event for Dungeon- and Game Masters – and those who would like to become such – to meet with other "masters" and discuss topics of interest to them. Are you a "master" yet? Or would you like to become one? What problems have you struggled with and how do others handle it? This isn't just a fantastic chance to expand your horizon on game mastering, it's also a huge artistic inspiration, much like a writer's guild where fantasy writers meet and exchange ideas. More, it's one of the strongest motivations for Dungeon- and Game Mastering as such. Can you do things better than others? Or can you learn from others? It's also a great social event to meet the most dedicated fans of pen & paper role playing games. Because sooner or later the most dedicated gamers usually end up becoming Dungeon- or Game Masters. We will start with an introduction round where we can share a bit of personal background with role playing games, then proceed to discussing Dungeon- and Game Mastering topics which are of the most interest to those attending. If you're interested and can, please think of something that you might like to discuss during the event. Event Conditions ******************* Maximum Participants: No limit Age Preference: Any Location: Restaurant Linde Oberstrass, Zürich Language: English Duration: 4 hours Bring: Yourself and a topic that you would like to discuss.
