Assateague Island is an excellent location for many reasons. We're going to explore a few of those reasons. Note that this is the National Seashore in Maryland (not the State Park, and not Chincoteague in Virginia).

Sunset - We'll meet at the Assateague Island Visitor's Center at 6:30pm, and combine our group into three cars. We'll take you to a great location for shooting the sunset, which takes place at 7:23 that evening.

Wild Ponies - From there, we'll look for the wild ponies that populate the Island (if they don't find us first), and also take advantage of the blue light that follows the sunset.

The Milky Way - And finally, we'll take you to one or more locations to shoot the Milky Way, which should make an appearance about 9:15 that night. (The photo that heads this event was taken just recently on the island.)

The training for the Milky Way is geared towards first timers with an interest in Nightscaping. You will need a DSLR (preferably full frame), a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f2.8 or wider, a cable or remote release, and a sturdy tripod. We'll provide all the necessary information on camera settings for shooting the Milky Way. The key for success in this area is getting proper single frame capture in camera combined with accurate focus for pinpoint sharp stars.

Bring a variety of lenses for shooting sunset, wildlife and other areas of the park, as well as a wide-angle lens with an aperture of at least f/2.8 for the Milky Way. Waterproof boots are also recommended for some areas. Please be familiar with your camera and be able to change settings in the dark.

The cost is $99, and we're limiting the event to 12 people, so that we can provide adequate instruction and assistance.
