  • The Maryland Socrates Cafe Meetup Group

A good idea for a gathering, and a good break from texting and emailing.

I was surprised by how thoughtful and informed the participants are/were. Looking forward to the next meeting . . .

Interesting, I liked it that everyone had chance to participate. However, I don't remember anyone specifically mentioning Socratic method and tying it in with our topic.

This is one of the groups that has good topics for discussions. I wish once in while we can come up with solutions.

A nice range of opinions from all OK to apocalypse due to super volcanos, cosmological events such as asteroid etc. strikes, Malthusian crisis and fossil fuel exhaustion, and societal disruption, balanced by a minority perspective that all is well and the Universe's plan is unfolding.

This is a superlatively fine group. No one ran away with the argument; no one seemed to have a hidden agenda or a hobby-horse (though we all, often, have places where, if you touch us, we overreact); everyone observed, more or less, the rules of either polite or not-quite-so-polite discourse. No yelling or screaming. Everyone seemed to know that some kind of evidence strengthens their argument. When we got off-topic, no one seemed to resent being pulled back onto topic. Even the digressions were useful if maybe not directly germane. I have had experience with one meeting of one other Socrates Cafe group. This group wins hands down. (I admit its possible the other group could have had a bad night,) ---12/03/2012 Something wrong with the text area. I have 226 chars left, but cannot see the line under this one, though I started it after a blank line. As I finish theres still 94 chars, but still no date below though it was typed. 12/3/2012

Overall a good discussion. I posted some follow up remarks on the discussion board if interested. Thanks, Tom, for putting this together.

Varied opinions, lively discussions, friendly people, a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds, and everyone gets to speak. I've attended every Sunday since I joined. What else is there to say?

Thanks Jack for your nice comments! Jack has fully justified why Socrates Cafe Silver Spring is such a delightful intellectual experience. Everyone is welcome and you don't need to join or RSVP to come. We have an open door policy. The only criteria? Bring an open mind and be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone.

Don't judge a book by its cover. I have been participating to this meeting for about 7 weeks now and I can assure the skeptics that the format is very relax. Face to face interactions between members have always been respectful. There are no disagreements, there are only different points of view.
