What we're about

Ever just get the urge to do long division? Enjoy calculating sums in your head? Are you curious about higher mathematics, but maybe don't have the time/energy/resources to invest in a full-on college degree? If so, this group is for you!

My goal in starting this group is to create a community for people who love math, but don't necessarily have the skills or confidence (yet) to join the other math groups on MeetUp. This is a group that welcomes absolute beginners, and my hope is that through mutual support and study we will develop into much more than beginners. In the age of the internet, we can learn anything. 😁

Some activities we might do include: math practice sheets, simple math puzzles, card games or board games based on math principles, and discussions about math self-study strategies, topics we'd like to learn next, and interesting books/articles/resources we'd like to share.

When you join this group, please post a message introducing yourself and tell us a bit about why you like mathematics. Cheers!

• Covid-19 Update: Since mid-March, "Math for Fun" has completely switched to online meetings, and we will continue to meet online for the foreseeable future. This change has necessitated a few alterations in the group format; namely that we no longer include board games or card games as a regular part of our meet- instead, our weekly topics have focused on various math riddles or visual puzzles that can be easily screen-shared.

I would also like to say that we've developed a wonderfully loyal core group of members who attend each week (even despite occasional technical difficulties); I just want to thank this group for helping work out the bugs as we navigate this transition.

Newcomers can expect to see more regular communications on this MeetUp page regarding upcoming events. I know this is a stressful time for everyone, and I hope this little math club can be a fun reprieve where we get to delve into the constant and yet mysterious world of mathematics.

Maybe The Gnome Problem

Online event

Topic: TBD... or maybe the "Gnome Problem" if we can't think of anything else.

⋙ ⋙ ⋙ Topics are always tentative. If the person who wanted to describe the topic doesn't make it, we'll either elect another person who wants to talk, or have a general discussion, or have game day :-) ⋘ ⋘ ⋘

𝛼 β 𝛾 Δ 𝜀 𝜁 η 𝜽 𝜄 𝜅 ƛ μ ν ξ ο π 𝜌 𝜎 𝜏 𝜐 𝜑 χ ѱ 𝛺
Welcome fellow numberphiles! Here is what you can expect at our next event:

When ≈ 12:00pm to 1:00pm every Sunday

Where ≈ Online - using Zoom.

⨁ What we do = "Math for Fun" aims to be a group that is intellectually stimulating, yet accessible to anyone with a basic understanding of arithmetic. Furthermore, we will have an emphasis on math based games that will hopefully encourage a light hearted atmosphere and the development of friendships based on our mutual love of numbers.

⨁ Math for Fun is a zero stress group. Nothing is expected of anyone :-) If something sounds fun, go for it. Last minute change of plans? No worries. So have fun, don't stress, and hopefully drop in when it tickles your fancy!

In addition to our weekly video meets, our co-organizer Tyler has created an instant chat site as well as a weekly forum for this group. Here are the links:

⨁ Chat ⊨ https://chat.mathlink.org/math/channels/meetup
Optional app: https://mattermost.com/download/
This one is for instantaneous chat, usually used side-by-side with Zoom, good for typing up "math format" things. It supports LaTeX, but not math mode. For a new account link, message me (Tyler). Unfortunately, Mattermost doesn't seem to allow pending approval accounts. ∴

⨁ Forum ⊨ https://mathlink.org/
This one is a set of forums for more long-term topics/questions/discussions. Feel free to check and/or post here anytime between official meets. You can make an account, and I'll approve you soon after. If you don't get approved within a day, message me (Tyler). ∴

⨁ Cost = $0. There are no membership fees, attendance fees, nothing. This group is completely free. :) ∴

The format is flexible, usually people introductions, a topic with brief explanation, followed by a discussion and then games! The games vary between abstract (Set) and themed (usually card games) and often analyzed mid-play, via probability or constraint based problems (e.g. "What would happen if...?"). ∴

⋙ ⋙ ⋙ One last thing, and it's important: "Math for Fun" aims to be a fun and SAFE space for all. ⋘ ⋘ ⋘

We believe that diversity of human beings enhances diversity of ideas, and that respect for others leads to personal growth and vibrant communities. We would like to explicitly state that ALL cultures, colors, creeds, nationalities, orientations, genders, gender IDs, ages, economic levels, physical/cognitive abilities, and neurotypes, will not only be safe here but will be joyfully welcomed to participate. (Basically just pretend we live in Star Trek and you'll be doing it right. :P) Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for being courteous, compassionate, and curious human beings! ∴

See you there!

Math for Fun - Game Day Online!

Online event

Topic: Game Day Online! This is our end-of-the-month social where we play any and all board games that have a "mathy" bent. Some games we've played in the past include "Set", "Can't Stop", "6 Nimmt", and "Hanabi". We'll start the meet by getting newcomers set up on boardgamearena.com. See ya Sunday!
