  • Aloha! You've heard of the Pacific Coast trail (PCT), John Muir trail, Appalachian trail, Kalalau trail and the Continental Divide trail? This is Maui's version of such a trail. It will take 2 days to complete with one night in Haleakala's Paliku campground. A total of 31 fun-filled, amazing miles. One for the ages. You only live once.

We will start at town of Kaupo, continue up Kaupo Gap to Paliku with full camp gear. Stay the night and continue next morning on to Halemau'u trail, up the switchbacks, then down to Hosmer Grove campground using the Supply trail. And finally, continue our descent along Bridal trail to end at Waihou Spring Forest reserve in Makawao. We will cover 6 different climate zones.

More information in the following weeks and month. This is an FYI to allow yourself enough time to physically prepare. Transportation shuttles, etc will be worked out at later date.

Please RSVP only if you clearly intend to participate!! Weather permitting.

    About this Trail:

Length: about 31 miles, one way over 2 days.

Elevation: Ascent total of 7.800 ft with various elevation gain and loss. Steep climb up Kaupo Gap trail, the hardest trail section on the island.

    Level: Strenuous. Period.

Trail Style - End to end.

Directions – In the Ace Hardware Pukalani parking lot to car pool. Park entrance fee $20 per vehicle or for $25 annual card.

    Bring -

    • water and filter, energy bars / snacks-lunch-dinner,

    • layered clothing, rain gear (always a possibility)

    • hat, sunglasses and headlamps. Yes, headlamps.

    • Highly Recommended - trekking poles.

The Organizers are volunteers, we are not paid hiking guides. Each person who participates accept responsibility for making their own determination and for their own safety, conduct and well being; recognizes that possible hazards when attending outdoor activities and agrees to participate solely at their own risk.

Remember the golden rule of hiking: Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.

Why you mention the vehicle fee? If we're walking into and out of the park?

Watch a mandatory video at visitor's center to camp in Paliku and obtain permits. By the time we start in Kaupo, it'll be close to 10:30-11am. Alex, Doris and I have experienced this routine. The Center opens at 8am.
