Launiupoko Valley Trail

Aloha! Not the most popular trail on Maui, perhaps because its relatively unknown to most people. Launiupoko Valley gives awesome views of West Maui. The trail passes through a housing subdivision, a reservoir, irrigation ditch bridge, century plants, guava trees, wild coffee trees and stream trekking. The trail begins in open space with almost no shade trees and continues along Launiupoko ditch stream under heavy vegetation. Expect some rock hopping on stream trail. Friendly dogs are welcome, but you may have trouble getting him/her across a "collapsing" bridge held up by an irrigation pipe. Weather permitting.

About this Trail:

Length - About 6 miles, RT. Estimate a 4 hour hike.

Elevation – 1,000 feet gain/loss. We start at 580 ft and max out at 1,524 ft.

Skill Level – Easy with some challenging rock/stream hopping.

Trail Style - Out and Back.

Directions – Across from Launiupoko beach park. If you come from Lahaina side, you can meet group at corner of Ka Hele Ku St./Honoapiilani Hwy around 9:15am.

Upcountry/Wailuku/Kihei members can meet at open parking lot between Ocean center-Carls Jr. Closer to Carls Jr end.

Bring -

• water, energy bars / snacks,

• rain gear (always a possibility)

• hat, sunglasses and camera.

• Optional - trekking poles.

It was cloudy at start, but was greeted with some sunshine at end of hike. Cool temperature and no rain made it a 3 hour hike. Thanks to all who participated. A hui hou.

    Will the group be split

    January 29, 2014

    • Bob

Aloha Kayla, no split. Its not necessary. The trail is easy for much of the way. This is one of the more easier hikes I've ever scheduled.

I was just asking because its a larger group and sometimes large groups are a bit cumbersome.
