The Startup Guide to Patenting

This seminar will focus on providing entrepreneurs with the tools they need to understand: why and how a startup’s value intimately depends on the scope and strength of patents; how to understand patent claims and use them to your advantage; how to decide what to patent; and what other forms of protection can be as valuable as patents. We will also explore how to get litigation-ready patents that can stand up to a court challenge and catch the eye of investors and competitors.

Darren M. Jiron is a partner in the Reston, Virginia, office of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett, and Dunner, LLP. Mr. Jiron concentrates on patent litigation and strategic development of patent portfolios in a wide range of technologies, including software, machine vision, optics, image processing, user interfaces, mobile device design and operation, advanced materials, and batteries. As an active member of Finnegan’s Israel practice, Mr. Jiron has helped many Israeli clients—from small start-ups to publicly traded companies—develop strategic patent plans and patent portfolios that help to maximize corporate value and leverage against competitors. Mr. Jiron is a former U.S. patent examiner and teaches an Advanced Patent Law course at Haifa University.
