The (wagging) tail-end of Gardiners Creek Trail

An off lead walking track with space for Woofers to run. It is an enclosed area that is bordered by the Monash Freeway to one side and the Glen Waverly - City train line on the other, crossing through the sports and recreation fields of Sir Zelman Cowen Park. The trail does cut across busy roads (with pedestrian lights) so there will be mandatory on lead moments. We will meet at Tooronga Park and walk to Glenferrie Road where there is a small coffee shop, then walk back to Tooronga station. Depending on pace it's approx 30 mins each way. The meeting spot at Tooronga Park is located right next to the city-bound side of Tooronga station (Milton Parade); there's plenty of unrestricted parking in the station and a coffee shop there too!

    Thanks to everyone who came - the weather was perfect and it was a fantastic group of owners and dogs. Charlie is conked out on the couch - a sure sign of a satisfying morning out. Some pics have been uploaded ... it was hard to get the subject matters to hold still! :-)

    We will also have to pass as Puckle has gone on heat, not the best situation for an off leash group event! :(

    Hi All,
    Im afraid Sam, I and Maggie are going to have to sit this one out. Sam has damaged his back right knee and is currently on anti inflammatory's and pain relief. Its very sad to see him hopping along on 3 legs and I am trying to keep him as quiet as i can to give his knee time to repair. Hopefully we will be back in business for the next big walk.

    Hey everyone. This is unrelated but if anyone ever wants their dog walked free of charge I am happy to do that for them. I don't own a dog myself but I loooove dogs, so it would be a real thrill for me to walk dogs in my spare time!

      Sorry I didn't know there was a discussion section, how do I locate that? I live in Preston, but also work in Cantebury so I am often over that way and finish around 4 most afternoons :) I just love dogs!

      Hi Samantha, the 'Discussions' tab is on the tool bar under the 'Melbourne Dog Walkers' banner at the top of the page.

    Hi, I will be bringing 2 chihuahuas who are badly in need of human socialisation, as they are rescue dogs in foster care and awaiting rehoming. So if you could all come and say hi to them and give them a cuddle that would be awesome. (No children though, as they may nip).

    September 2, 2013

    • Steph

      Any excuse to give some pooches a cuddle :D

      September 2, 2013

    • Sel

      Hi Karyn I'm sure your two pooches will have plenty of love and attention! We look forward to seeing you :-)

    I live near the caulfield park and go there most days with my dog. I have not heard of any problems nor experienced any. I know many dog walkers who go there regularly - no one has had a concern. So caulfield is fine by me. I don't have any concerns about gardiner's creek either as also go there regularly. Thanks everyone

    August 30, 2013

  • Kate

    Hi sel and all, thanks for looking into this and your concern. It sounds to me like there is no real reason to move the gardiner's creek meetup, given what we have heard from the council and your chat with the ranger. I'll give glen eira council another call just before the Caulfield park meetup in October to be sure no new information has emerged.

    August 30, 2013

  • Sel

    Hi all, I've spoken to the Ranger at Stonnington Council who talked to me about areas in that LG area and also about the Caulfield Park "speculation" - as he called it. He told me that the only suspicious material that has been found in any dog park was found recently in a park in Windsor. Lab results have not come back; 2 dogs were sick. He has heard about the Caulfield issue and he says that vets and the councils have heard stories but not from any owner of a dog that has died or become sick. He believes that it is a hoax. I spoke to the ranger about the area above, and he says it is well kept. It is an area where the local dog rescue / city pound takes all dogs twice daily for exercise. Given nervousness I am just as happy to relocate to a non dog park area, such as a beach for this month until everything clears up.

    August 29, 2013

    • Steph

      What a horrible hoax and nasty rumour to spread. We're easy, it does sound like a lot of hearsay, but totally happy to relocate if that's the best move :)

    I have today spoken to Glen Eira Council (which is responsible for Caulfield Park) regarding the poisoning reports on social media. I have been advised as follows:

    - the Council is aware of the comments on social media, and is investigating their origin, as the comments contain claims which the Council takes seriously;
    - so far, the Council has not received nor found evidence that there is any factual basis to the comments;
    - the Council has not received any reports from local residents about illness or death of their dog due to poisoning;
    - no local vets in the area have reported illness or death of dogs as a result of poisoning;
    - after being notified of the reports, the Council has inspected Caulfield Park and found no signs of any poison.

    I 'll leave it with you to form your own opinion on the credibility of the poisoning reports on social media. I do suggest you speak to local authorities if you have concerns, as they can provide information relevant to the local area.

    • Linda

      Thank you for following up Kate - I've only just managed to catch up on the conversation. As much as such reports concern me, I'd take the word of the council first (plus my computer virus protection warned me against visiting inagist.com....which doesn't bode well). I think there will be enough of us there that we can keep an eye on the dogs and ensure they don't ingest anything that they shouldn't - but obviously the decision whether to still go is up to the individual.

    Have you looked at fawkner park south Yarra? It's very good there & safe. I go there alot.

    August 28, 2013

  • Sel

    Hi Holly and all, I will call the council and check it out, but I think if there is any doubt we just find a new location. Keep the date and time - venue to be advised.

    1 · August 27, 2013

    • Steph

      Any luck, Sel? I can't find a thing on it anywhere.

      August 28, 2013

    • Sel

      Hi Steph, I can't either. It's really disappointing but I really don't want to take a chance. I'm out that way on Sat so ill stop in and ask the locals. there's another park in the region that Ill scope out.

      August 28, 2013

  • Holly R.

    I was told today by a experienced dog walker 8 dogs have died and been poisoned at this park!! It was on the radio & news. Perhaps it's worth calling the local council for more info first before settling on this spot. I'm very reluctant to take my boy there if there is a local crazy resident wanting to kill dogs. Has anyone else heard this news today?????

    August 27, 2013

    • Steph

      Eeeek. I can't find anything on Google, but will keep looking and perhaps try the council in the morning.
