Haskell Workshop (Full Day)

Free introductory, full-day, Haskell workshop.

Online workshop content:

http://sordina.github.io/haskell_workshop/

The workshop is tailored for people with practical programming experience, but requires no previous functional programming experience.

The workshop will be run by Andy Kitchen and Lyndon Maydwell with assistance from volunteer experienced Haskellers. Let us know if you are interested in providing hands-on assistance.

Lunch is kindly provided by ThoughtWorks.

Requirements:

* A Laptop
* The Haskell Platform - http://www.haskell.org/platform/

P.S.

If you have trouble getting into the venue on the day, then give me a call on 0405577482.

If you consider yourself to be an intermediate to experienced Haskeller and still wish to attend, please consider volunteering as opposed to attending as a regular participant. Non-volunteer attendance is targeted at ~40 people and we are now in the process of regulating numbers in order to match the available capacity of the venue.

~~~
We are running this workshop to spread functional programming to a wider audience. Everyone involved in this workshop is a volunteer who loves functional programming.
    Any chance of running this again this year guys?
    September 26, 2014
    • Lyndon M.
      Maybe we can make this happen some time in the new year. What are your thoughts?
    • Jim P.
      Yeah for sure man. Do you have my email? Let's have a chat about what it would take?
    Great refresher on my very basic Haskell knowledge, and a big step forward in understanding Monads... I think.
    To tired for learning a new language this weekend. Pity, nothing like a new language.
      Took me off the wait-list.
      Thanks ;-)
    My symbolic differentiation code if anyone's interested: https://github.com/logaan/haskell-derivitive/blob/master/derivitive.hs I took it in a bit of a different direction to what was suggested. It does not implement all rules (eg. it's missing chain and quotient).
    September 21, 2013
    • Noon S.
      the quotient rule is just the product rule AND the chain rule!
    Lovely place, well organized, excellent volunteers. Expect for more!
    Thanks to the organisers, presenters and volunteer instructors for my first hands on experience with Haskell !
    A great day! Thanks to organisers and the volunteers. I learned a few things that will definitely stay with me! :)
    Thanks for doing this. Great value!
    Sorry for late withdrawal but the flu bug I've been fighting has hit today so think I probably shouldn't come share my germs with you all.
    I had a version of haskell installed from before the Haskell Platform (7.4.2). If you find yourself in a similar situation you can remove the old version with "sudo uninstall-hs only 7.4.2 --remove".
    Have to pull out unfortunately, going to see my brother while he's in victoria
    September 20, 2013
    • Lyndon M.
      No problems. We're going to be setting up a dedicated Haskell group some time soon, so there's more Haskell to come.
    Out of the country that day and many days thereafter. I hope you can hold another one early next year. :)
      I will go on your behalf ;-)
    Time and place are now finalised. We will be running the workshop on the 21st of this month, from 10am until 5pm, with an hour for lunch at 12pm. The location for the meetup will be the ThoughtWorks offices on Collins Street.
    Unfortunately, we are going to be capped at a maximum attendance of 40 people due to space constraints. I will update the meetup details with restricted attendance recommendations in order to narrow down attendance to the desired number. If you are not able to attend on the 21st, please update your RSVP status so that we have a more accurate estimate of numbers.
    Thanks you for your interest so far everyone. Andy and I are looking forward to putting on a great introductory workshop!
    I'll be flying back from the US on that day as well. Shame! :(
    If this date is locked in, I'll change my RSVP.
  • Andrew M.
    This should make a great birthday present. Thanks guys!
    Not coming back to Melbourne from overseas til that morning, so probably cannot make it :'(
    Hi peeps!
    It looks like we're in the final stages of locking down the venue. If all goes to plan then the date will be on Saturday, the 21st of September.
    Once this is taken care of we will shift the discussion to how to best partition the number of people attending, as currently interest is exceeding the available space. There are a few excellent ideas floating around, but nothing is finalised. Drop by the subreddit to take part in the discussion :-)
    Suppose the output of `cabal --version` is
    cabal-install version[masked]
    using version[masked] of the Cabal library Should one be concerned?
    July 31, 2013
    • Gaurav
      Don't think so, I'm getting the same output. http://www.haskell.or...
      July 31, 2013
    • Lyndon M.
      I think that should be fine. If you're referring to the "Cabal" section of the requirements, that is only meant to indicate that you have Cabal installed rather than the specific version in the output.
