The same impact that a lack of a finance department has on the company's finances. Basically the Knowledge equivalent of a bunch of receipts in a cardboard box.
The process of discovering whatever techniques, processes and technologies will best impact a group's 1) Ambient Awareness, and 2) Adaptive Ability, in order to better achieve the groups objectives.
I currently work in the healthcare technology field. Roles include Knowledge Management, Application Design & Implementation, Change Mgt and Project Mgt. I have a Masters degree in KM through UniSA.
