Technology platforms let us solve cool and wicked problems while standing on the shoulders of others. This meetup is for those Platform Engineers that love to design, discuss, probe and evangelise the platform technologies and scaled approaches that have helped them make a difference.
This meetup will cover a huge breadth of technology, by doers and for doers, so that we may all learn from each other.
We welcome and celebrate all people working in tech, across every race, ethnicity, country of origin, sexual orientation, visible and invisible ability – we only ask that you have a curious and open mind, and a desire to continuously push and learn!

TCOG, from Monolith to SOA; how Newscorp renders its article pages
TCOG is a bespoke rendering and caching platform that handles high volume traffic to render the article page on some of Australia's biggest news sites (news.com.au, theaustralian.com.au, heraldsun.com.au, etc.). Written as a Node express app in 2014, it was refactored into an SOA platform of 7 services in 2017, running on 10 Elastic Container Service clusters on AWS using Typescript, Node, Varnish and Redis. The presentation will walkthrough the architecture and history of the platform, and open pathways of conversation to the audience about dealing with refactoring monoliths, building services, caching and reverse proxy patterns, using docker, etc
Speaker: Nicholas Faiz, Platform Lead of Dynamic Content Services, TCOG, at Newscorp
Nicholas has worked on this platform for four years and has 20 years of commercial experience across a number of languages and problem spaces
Lessons in building a modern container platform on AWS
Over the past year we have built a robust container platform on AWS, utilising some of the latest AWS services such as EKS and SSO. The platform has incorporated products such as Kafka, Hashicorp Vault and Velero, and included a full CICD environment using Buildkite, Sonarqube and Nexus. The presentation will walkthrough the high level architecture of the OpenData Platform in AWS, discuss lessons learned running these services in production, and managing the Day 2 operations of EKS.
Speaker: Michael Kandelaars, Senior Consultant with Deloitte Platform Engineering
For the past 4 years he has built scalable and secure platforms on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure for clients in Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands. He is passionate about building secure and performant containerised environments using Kubernetes and Openshift, and of building a DevOps culture. He has worked in the banking industry assisting the adoption of OpenBanking, and also in the Australian publishing industry.
