SHELBY FARMS SUNDAY STROLLS - nature hike

  • Shelby Farms

500 N Pine Lake Dr, Memphis, TN (map)

    35.135194 -89.839649

  • Hike departs the Visitor's Center at 2pm
  • SHELBY FARMS SUNDAY STROLLS - Nature Hike - departs the Visitor Center at 2pm.  This is a new regularly scheduled hike (third Sunday of the month) but the time will change and the daylength changes - so recheck the time.

These nature hikes will be different each month lasting 1.5 to 2 hours and we can do more if the group desires.  They will be on trails, through open fields and sometimes we may even venture off trail.  They are slow going as we explore nature and see what we can find.

Bring some water and your cameras.  Appropriate hiking footware should be worn and we will be in both sun and shade.  Children/families welcome, but no pets please.

    UPDATE FOR THIS SPECIFIC DATE...

SUPER KID FRIENDLY EVENT - SUNDAY STROLLS NATURE HIKE, MARCH 16 departs the back patio (next to Patriot Lake) at 2PM SHARP for a look at macro invertebrates in the waters in the area…

The actual hike will be relatively short (less than 2 miles) – we will visit several places of water – vernal pools, ponds, and spring streams to check out what macro invertebrates (critters we can see without a microscope) we can find.  We will hike to the water areas (includes going through some brush so wear long pants and appropriate shoes) and we will be out for a couple of hours – so bring some water/snacks.  We will be getting our hands wet with pond water – so you might want to bring some anti-bacterial hand cleaner and towels.  Collection trays and handouts will be provided.

If you as an adult/parent have never done this, YOU WILL BE AMAZED!  Bring your kids – I guarantee that you both will be DELIGHTED in all the things we will find.  You will not believe all critters that are in the water.

HIKE CANCELLED - since today’s hike is totally off trail and the ground is mushy from all the rain, we are going to cancel the hike.

Rain may delay an hour or two - or cancel this event. If in doubt, call 767-PARK after NOON or check for a post. If it is not too cool and only misting, we will go for it... But we will decide by NOON...

If some of you guys have mud boots and can wear them, I could use your help. A couple of us will need to step into shallow water to get water samples... Thx

Sorry, no mud boots or I'd gladly help.
