What we're about

People with mental illness want to recover, and they can and do recover! However, it is often not clear how to do that, and the existing mental health care system does not teach us. This a group for people suffering from mental illness who wish to pursue a path of recovery through education, personal growth, and healing with the mutual support of others who are on a similar path.
It seems that mental illness and distress are becoming increasingly widespread in our society, sometimes even being referred to as an “epidemic”. The institutions in our society with responsibility for formulating and delivering mental health care - such as insurance companies, medical schools, public health agencies, and so forth – have simply failed to mount any kind of adequate response to this public health crisis. The existing approaches tend to rely excessively on the use of psychotropic medications. And while medication is helpful for some, this approach fails to acknowledge and address the complex causes behind mental illness. As a result, it does not provide a path to wholeness, which is the ultimate desire of everyone who suffers from mental illness.
This group is based on the premise that individuals can and do recover from mental illness. In order to maximize the chances of recovery, we need to be cognizant of the full spectrum of factors that can impact mental health – psychological, developmental, biomedical, spiritual, social, financial, and so forth. Mental illness ultimately affects potentially every aspect of our being and we may need to confront it systematically on every front and level. We also need to acknowledge the critical importance of receiving support from others who have walked, or are walking, the same path. This is known as peer support.
This is a peer support group for people struggling with mental illness and their loved ones. Since institutional mental health care has systematically failed to provide us with optimal conditions for pursuing our recovery, it is now time for us to address it ourselves from the grassroots level. The goal of this group therefore is to support individuals in pursuing a holistic path of recovery from mental illness. We view the recovery process as an ongoing journey of learning, experimentation, and growth. We also acknowledge that we help ourselves best by helping others. And by coming together to share our struggles and triumphs we all have the potential to benefit.
