Livestream: Data and Tech for Longevity, An Introduction

This event will be Livestreamed here: https://livestream.com/accounts/23925505/events/8677196 This meetup will start with a high-level overview of aging: 1. Why aging? 2. What happens to you as you age? 3. Does every species experience aging or is it just us? 4. [How you are (most likely) going to die]....you’re welcome. 5. How is all this happening — what’s making you age anyway? 6. Can’t anyone stop this aging business? Next, we will discuss some high-level approaches to ending aging and extending life, the role of AI/tech in longevity, why now is the best time to get started, and what you can do about it (you can help and you can help in a big way). Shreya will then discuss her motivation for starting MoreLife (https://www.morelife.tech/) and explain how you can work on interesting data and engineering projects to help solve one of the biggest problems impacting humankind. We are now at a juncture in the aging field: year over year, there is an exponential increase in data availability, but not necessarily in the availability of data scientists, artificial intelligence practitioners, software engineers, data engineers, machine learning experts, and more. The goal of MoreLife is to bridge this gap between aging research labs and data science / machine learning / engineering expertise. MoreLife is made up of two groups: experts and volunteers. Experts from the aging sector share a list of problems that are slowing them down. Volunteers, then, try to help eliminate these problems. MoreLife is inspired by researchers in aging and longevity, folks in tech who dedicate their free time to meaningful projects, and philosophers behind efforts such as DataKind, Code for America, Scikit-Learn and many others. Check out the meetup here: https://www.meetup.com/Data-Tech-for-longevity/ Shreya's background is in Math and Physics. She has over a decade of experience in data science, data strategy, and data products. She has worked in finance, edtech, civictech, and more. She also has her own data consulting company, under which she consults with edtech organizations, schools, districts, and cities on effectively using their data. She has recently started MoreLife, which is a result of one of her deepest yearnings: for humankind to have an option to live longer and healthier. The mission of MoreLife is to build a network that can help accelerate breakthroughs in aging and longevity. Livestream: Info Session Feat. Alumni Carlie Badder and Jhonsen Djajamuliadi

Note: this event will be Livestreamed here: https://livestream.com/accounts/23925505/events/8675764 Join us on Livestream as the Metis Seattle team walks you through a sampling of what students learn during their 12 weeks of project-based data science work. You'll also hear from Metis alumni about how to prepare, what to expect, and what happens after you attend the Metis Data Science Bootcamp. Metis alum Jhonsen Djajamuliadi will present his final project at Metis and then will join Carlie Badder for a Q&A panel. About our alumni Carlie is a Data Scientist at Avanade. She has a passion for machine learning, translating data into insights, and making a difference in people's days. Her data science skill set is built upon a broad background of knowledge ranging from mechanical engineering and medical sciences to research and customer service. She loves being a part of multidisciplinary teams that value crossover and skill sharing, doing the dirty work and having big picture discussions. She graduated from the school of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Pennsylvanian. Jhonsen is a recent Metis graduate with a unique background in Chemistry. His graduate studies focused on applying both experimental and computational techniques to solve protein structures. Data-driven research eventually led him into the world of data science and machine learning. The capstone project he will present at the Open House uses convolutional neural network to identify images of produce and provides a recommendation for personalized, healthier- ingredient-based recipes. AMA Ask Me Anything About Transitioning to Data Science from Academia

NOTE: This is a live "Ask Me Anything" within the Metis Community Slack channel. To join, apply at the link below. http://bit.ly/MetisCommunitySlack Once you're in, join the #general channel and ask away! Looking to make the switch from academia to data science but not sure where to start? Join us to learn more about one Metis instructor's journey and how you, too, can evolve your career in this "Ask Me Anything." Kimberly Fessel is a bootcamp instructor at Metis's New York campus. Prior to joining the Metis team, she worked in digital advertising where she used natural language processing techniques to help clients better understand and enhance communication with their customers. Kimberly made the transition to data science following her role as a postdoctoral fellow at the Ohio State University. She holds a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where she studied the nonlinear fluid-solid dynamics of the cochlea. She strongly believes that skills learned as an academic help strengthen careers in data science, including research experience, communication ability, as well as drive and determination. Livestream: Power of Workflows: A Problem Well-Stated is a Problem Half-Solved

This event will be Livestreamed here: https://livestream.com/accounts/23925505/events/8689205 Data Science is a field with immense breadth and depth. As our toolkit grows and we learn how to chain models and pipelines together, there's no limit to the time and complexity we can devote to over-engineering a solution. In my role as a data science instructor at Metis, and during my tenure at Microsoft before that, I've observed time and again that many data scientists seem to be much better at learning algorithms and software libraries than they are at identifying good business cases to solve, and designing workflows that will enable them to work productively from start to finish. In this workshop I share a user-focused design approach to building an end-to-end minimum viable product for any data science project. By asking and answering the right questions at the start of any new project, we can set a course that points to clear choices for the design decisions we face along the way. I teach this in the context of building a music genre classification model that can be used to generate playlists from text descriptions.
