  • Livestream: Intro to Linear Algebra for Data Science

    Metis Livestream

This event will be Livestreamed here: https://livestream.com/metis/events/8625335 Before there was machine learning, there was linear algebra. And if you’d like to be proficient in data science, a basic understanding of linear algebra is essential. If you’ve ever wished to dive deeper into the math of your favorite algorithms, or if you’ve been meaning to crack open that college linear algebra book for a refresher but didn’t know where to start, this is the event for you! We’ll be going at a fairly quick clip through the fundamentals of linear algebra. The intention is not so much to learn all the linear algebra you’d ever need for data science, but rather to give you a solid footing so that you can kickstart your own studies. We’ll be starting with the basics and will assume no prior knowledge in linear algebra. We’ll spend about 90 minutes going through a lecture, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions. No technical background is required and you don’t need to bring a laptop (unless you’d like one to take notes on). You might want to bring a notebook and pencil to take notes. There will be time before and after to mingle and ask questions or for recommendations on your personal math journey. Are you thinking about applying to the Metis Data Science Bootcamp? Check out the Metis Admissions Prep here: https://www.thisismetis.com/admissions-prep Lara Kattan is a Senior Data Scientist at Metis. Sis constantly awe struck by how math and statistical models can so reasonably approximate the messy real world, and loves to share her passion for the theory. Lara comes to Metis from McKinsey, where she worked with financial institutions on risk modeling. Prior to settling into the practical world of consulting, Lara received a master's from the University of Chicago, where she had the privilege of thinking about problems with no real-world implications. There her passion for unstructured thinking and novel problem solving were nurtured and she took the lessons learned with her into conference rooms and PowerPoint decks. The statistical and mathematical elegance of data science are what animate her the most, but she gets her biggest joy from demystifying the rigorous mathematics for all audiences. If forced to snap out of her mathematical reveries, she's probably doing yoga, riding a bike, or drinking too much coffee. TALKS Introducing Bayesian Data Science with Python: Using PyMC3 By Lara Kattan Get started with using Python for data science by learning to build a simple model in the package PyMC3. Learn how to structure a data science question, organize your dataset, and start running simple models using a Bayesian paradigm. Bayesian statistics has steadily gained attention and importance as a paradigm of doing data science in the last few decades and in the past few years has started to move from academia to industry. Kick off your data science journey with this exciting new way of looking at data. Lara is constantly awe struck by how math and statistical models can so reasonably approximate the messy real world, and loves to share her passion for the theory. Image-guided diagnosis of prostate cancer: Teaching machines to differentiate between malignant and benign tissues By Layan Nahlawi In this talk, we discover how stochastic models, namely Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), can be used to provide image guidance to physicians during diagnostic procedures of prostate cancer. We’ll discuss how HMMs harvest tissue-specific information from ultrasound-based signals of prostate and use it to report malignancy likelihood. Using these likelihoods, risk-maps of prostate tissues are built to assist clinicians in collecting specimen from regions highly likely to be cancerous. We’ll also go over my published-results on this approach to show how it improves distinguishing between tissue types compared to the state-of-the-art. We'll also take a quick look at how Keras deep learning library is used for larger datasets of prostate ultrasound-images. • Livestream: Managing Data Science Projects

    Metis Livestream

This event will be Livestreamed here: https://livestream.com/metis/events/8565438 EVENT Managing Data Science projects is notoriously difficult. Going into a project it can be difficult or impossible to foresee data quality issues, which models will work well, and how much effort is necessary to ship a data product. Leaning on a few years of leading data science engagements at startups and large companies, I've picked up a few tricks to keep data science projects on-time and meeting mission critical milestones, all while keeping data scientists happy. We'll touch on how data science projects differ from most software engineering projects, why its important to spend a bit more time planning them, and how to make sure your projects are a success. BIO Brendan Herger enjoys bridging the gap between data science and engineering, to build and deploy data products. He is a Senior Data Scientist at Metis. Brendan brings a unique combination of machine learning, deep learning, and software engineering skills. In his previous work at Capital One and startups, he has built authorization fraud, insider threat, and legal discovery automation platforms. In each of these cases he's lead a team of data scientists and data engineers to enable and elevate his client's business workflow (and capture some amazing data). When he's not knee deep in a code base, Brendan can be found traveling, sharing his collection of Japanese teas, and playing board games with his partner in Seattle. • Livestream: Global Graph Celebration Day - Graph-Based Business Intelligence

This event will be Livestreamed here: https://livestream.com/accounts/23925505/events/8616056 This event is being hosted as part of GlobalGraphCelebrationDay.com. Abstract Graph databases are core big data technology. This adoption requires mainstream business tointegrate with other business technologies, such as Business Intelligence. We explain why businesses are moving to graph to solve complex data problems and then explain why existing BI solutions fall short when paired with graph technology. View a preview of what the future of graph-based BI looks like. This talk walks through the adoption of graph databases to solve complex business problems through the required evolution of business intelligence tools to support this new technology. The talk will review the benefits of graph database vs relational database for data science and businesses use cases, e.g. Customer 360, law enforcement - - We will show how the graph database is essentially an enhanced relational database where relationships are expressed directly as edges, rather than indirectly as joins. We examine how this structure gives rise to major benefits when dealing with very large datasets, and in looking for patterns buried in multi-party relationships. We will discuss and demonstrate some of the more sophisticated graph-based visualizations and algorithms that are now possible.
