I-80, water gap , PA
Join us for this, the NEXT hike in the 911 National Memorial Trail series! This is the first section in PA which has a lot of roads, but we're doing something different, adding in a short loop at the start, a winery visit, more history, and a side trip to two outstanding waterfalls and a slate quarry!
We will meet at the PA Welcome Center just off of Interstate 80 in Delaware Water Gap, then shuttle to out start point. A portion of this hike will cover what we did on the previous section, but then continue to the "Knowlton Trail" for a partial loop at the start, and we plan to visit a winery and do a tasting!
We'll continue on the alternate rail bed out to Columbia again, then cross the footbridge into PA. I will show several historic sites as we head to the north, and walk through the little town of Slateford where we can get lunch at a bar and grill.
Then, we'll make our way to three waterfalls on Slateford Creek.
We'll continue from here along the trails of Slateford Farm past more historic sites, then onto Arrow Island Trail
These trails parallel Rt 611 heading to the north and provide a much better route than walking boring and busy Rt 611 as the current alignment is shown. We will also pass a view and an historic slate quarry before returning to 611.
We will get back to 611 just in time to view Cold Air Cave, a former tourist destination when Delaware Water Gap was the vacation capital of the world. We'll also pass the point of gap lookout where we'll see the "Indian Head" on the NJ side.
We'll pass Resort Point on the way, which is where the Caldeno Creek once flowed into the kitchen of the Kittatinny Hotel, with some nice views. I point out more ruins here, and then we'll walk into the famous Appalachian Trail town of Delaware Water Gap.
This is just about the end, and we can get dinner somewhere locally.
This hike is likely to be a bit slower going, because we'll be making stops at the falls, for lunch, and for the winery, but it's very easy walking for the rest of it, and anyone who wants to go further ahead after Slateford can certainly finish faster.
