  • Journey To: Accessibility and Inclusion
Join us at Chinook Centre on November 10th for a very special two-hour event for you. As part of our “Journey To” event series, we are hosting monthly business workshops with the aim to support the business community in Calgary, growing the skills and knowledge of our entrepreneurial attendees with unique presentations and networking opportunities. With our special guest speaker, Sean Crump – Head Chair and CEO of Universal Access, we will focus on the importance of accessibility and inclusiveness, how it impacts our community, and how technology can empower people of all abilities. You will also have a chance to network with other local professionals, and there'll be free food and drinks, too! Space is limited – please RSVP for yourself and any additional attendees you would like to invite along. We look forward to see you on November 10th! ABOUT SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER SEAN CRUMP | Head Chair and CEO of Universal Access Having spent the last 13 years of Sean’s life in a wheelchair, living as a quadriplegic, he has seen firsthand some of the amazing steps taken towards creating more inclusive environments and communities. Understanding how far things have come, and the immense amount of work and processes that have had to go into achieving these improvements, Sean has found himself looking at how he can help further the current initiatives. Starting with a basic inclusive atmosphere he firmly believes it then allows for more opportunity in ways of; employment, community engagement, and true immersion into society (properly representing the demographic). Aiming for an end result that ultimately helps decrease the anxiety and apprehension, of people with varying abilities, when looking to participate or experience anything they desire. Outside of Sean’s experience he has worked through select AODA training courses that include (but not limited to); Customer Service Standard along with Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR). He has also been trained to assess spaces based on accessibility utilizing not only the AODA but also the ADA standards. When first getting into this specific field of work Sean started out by familiarizing himself with both the ADA and the AODA Universal Design standards. At which point he worked as a consultant for accessibility audits, assessments, and consultation (to architects and designers) on built environments. After recognizing a gap in this industry, he chose to start his own business (Universal Access) that specializes in not only consulting, but also certifying spaces as accessible locations. Sean’s personal goal for this endeavor is to create as much awareness around, not only accessibility, but which spaces are accessible to the general public. This goal’s ultimate purpose is to allow all people to experience any destination they desire without the apprehension or uncertainty of knowing whether or not the venue/space can meet their needs. We are meeting this goal by strategically partnering with not-for-profit organizations that have large down streams and large member basis that will allow us to push this information out to as many individuals as possible. Thereby, allowing as many people the opportunity to engage in any activity they should so choose to do. Currently he volunteers as a Board Member for Momo inclusive dance. He has helped advise on the design of residential homes built for aging in place (AIP) as well as a home, for an individual newly injured and uncertain about what his needs may be and how they can be met in his home. Sean worked closely with a number of not-for-profit organizations (most recently Accessible Housing) helping in any capacity they need, whether it's from event planning to member engagement, he has established an open relationship with these groups where at any point they can reach out and obtain his assistance at any capacity required.
