Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail: Turkey Run Park to Roosevelt Island! A Moderate to Easy Side of Strenuous 9 Miles with Rock Scrambles!

Fairfax and Arlington counties are the close-in home of a far-out trail endowed with river views, touches of wilderness, waterfalls, rock scrambling, relics, and solitude.

Here is your chance to both sample the second longest trail east of the Mississippi river (after the AT) and experience what proselytizer Bruce Glendening calls “one of the best urban-area hikes east of the Mississippi.” The sample consists of the 9 mile long Potomac Heritage Trail (PHT) secreted in the George Washington Memorial Parkway’ broad right-of-way along the Potomac River between the Capital Beltway and Theodore Roosevelt Island. This is a 9 mile hike with about 1,300 feet of elevation change including a front-end piece of Turkey Run and there can be some muddy places so hiking boots are recommended. This is not a sneaker hike.
