SNP Swimmin' Hole and Waterfalls Hike: Overall Run Falls! 10 Strenuous Miles

Swimmin' Hole and Waterfall Hike in SNP! A Strenuous 10 Mile Hike (Parts on the Appalachian Trail) in Shenandoah National Park to Enjoy the Always Impressive 93 Foot Overall Run Falls!

This loop hike holds a great reward! Start with a pleasant mountaintop stroll, and make your way down the slopes of Hogback Mountain, entering the Overall Run watershed. Pass a warm-up falls then arrive at Overall Run Falls. From a rocky precipice you can see the nearby cataract and a whole lot more beyond. This is a fairly difficult hike; part of the trail is moderately steep, and part is rough and rocky. Overall Run Falls is an impressive 93 feet drop, the highest in the Park. There is another waterfall on this hike as well, which is a 29 foot fall. Like nearly all of the waterfalls in the Park it's a cascade down the face of the rock, rather than a sheer plunge (see above photo). When there's plenty of water after a rainy spring, it's a beautiful and magical sight! Also, when it is hot outside, there is a fantastic simmin' hole.

Swimmin' Hole Alert

There are several great places to take a dip to cool off and enjoy on this hike if you desire, hence planning this adventure for this time of year. The water is always cold and refreshing. If you choose to cool off in one of the many available sparkling clear mountain water "pools", please bring a towel or something to change into if you desire. B-Day suits are at your own risk-grin.

Hike Pace
This hike will be led at a moderate pace of about 2.5mph and is about the average hiking pace.

Fido is Welcome on This Hike Only With Leader Permission

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Let's have good times and see you on the trail!

With all the water crossing and dipping that seems in store, I'm bringing extra socks. I'm not your TL, but it's something to think about. Look forward to y'all tomorrow.

Hi Villo. I can also meet at Centerville, and can either carpool or drive (I don't have a pass though.) If I'm not the driver, will contribute toward gas & the entry fee.

I am in NW DC and happy to share a ride, either driving or as rider. Can meet anywhere along the route. DC, Arlington, Falls Chruch. Or Centreville as last resort. (Hope you don't mind top-down cruising.)

When the level is strenuous, what 'exactly' does that qualify most of the time? I put it in quotes because I know it can change. I love hiking and am a big runner and cyclist. Would love to check it out but don't want to put myself in the wrong place to inconvenience others.
Thanks for any tips and inside info on this hike!

As you're already a runner and cyclist, your cardiovascular fitness should be fine. Quads, and gluts strength endurance should also be okay. Wear boots to prevent rolling ankles, wicking clothes to prevent being soaked in sweat , bring 2.5 liters or so of water. That's about it.
