The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group Presents

Backpacking 101: Backpacking On The Appalachian Trail

So are ready to take your hiking and outdoor skills to the next level? We are having a overnight backpacking trip along a relatively flat section of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. In case you do not know, backpacking involves carrying all your gear with you in your pack. This includes tent, sleeping bag, food, etc. I will provide a complete list of things needed. This trip is an out and back. The first day we will backpack 8.5 miles and stop near a spring with some tent pads (these are first come first serve) We will set up our tents, cook dinner, have a fire, spend the night, make breakfast, pack up and backpack to our cars.

Note:

This will not be a walk in the park! Adding 25-35 lbs to your back is very strenuous. You should be able to hike 10 miles easily. This is a beginners trip so no backpacking experience is needed but you need to be in good shape.

I know that backpacking gear can be expensive so we are going to pool our resources. The two items that you will need is a backpack and sleeping bag. We can bring some bigger tents but we will need to split up the parts among us to share the extra weight of these.

For those who are interested I will be sharing my knowledge along the way for those who want more detailed information on different types of equipment.

I will try and schedule a telephone pre-meeting so we discuss all the details and answer any questions.

If you have a tent, please email me with how many people can hold (no gear)

Trail Head is at Myersville parking area. Take I-70 West to Exit 42 to 17 North. Turn Right to stay on !7 in the small town area. Turn left on Rt 40. Go about 3.1 miles. As you come up a steep hill there is a parking area on the left side. If you cross over the overpass you have gone too far. The closest intersection for GPS is Canada Hill Rd & Rt 40 Myersville MD 21773

I'm so sorry to miss this trip, but unfortunately I'm sick, and even if I recover completely I will have a lot of work to make up; I hope someone else can take my spot and have a great time.

Thanks for your email Glen. Do you have any recommendations for a quality backpack. I just purchased the Deuter 65+10 from REI in preperation for the outing but would welcome your input and suggestions. I have a 1-2 man tent (comfortabe for 1; 2 would be stretchig the limit) that I can bring to minimize your load. What should I bring food and gear wise. Thanks, Ron

If you have any questions at all feel free to email me. I have been in contact with some of you already. Do not feel obligated to go out an buy a bunch of gear. You will need a backback though. The rest we can share.

    Hello Glenn and the group,
Looking forward to my first backpacking experience and hopefully not the last. I'm sure this will be significantly more adventurous than the car camping I've done. I would be very interested in learning more about backpacking from you as well. Thanks, Ron
